I was wondering if anyone has read A Course In Miracles. I am looking for someones take on the books.
I bought them years ago but I couldn't get past the first page. It speaks of Jesus speaking and I was too conditioned to the thought that one should only be reading about what Jesus says in the Bible.
So I am thinking of maybe trying to read it again.
Anyone?

Nakis,
I have not read this book but I am aware of it- you can probably order it if you dont see it on the shelf.
But- what I wiil tell ya, and this is from someone who is not a christian, is this....

The bible is an interpretation by man and on top of that it has been translated and many deletions have occurred (i.e. the apocrypha). So if someone is doing new writing I say it's ok. Have you ever wondered how some churches come up with some of their crap after reading the bible?? They bear no resemblence to what the christ actually taught.

So, if someone out their is writing about christ in a new way I say hooray. And really- the Christ is not contained in the words of a book- he should be living in the heart and that's what has been forgotten to the point where Jesus would be shocked into turning over the money changers tables once again if he returned. go on and enjoy the book. sundog says so!

Thanks again Sundog.
I agree that the bible is taken too literally and that it was written and interpreted by men. I don't take the Bible as most Christians take it. That is not to say the mental programs of old still don't run through my mind. And I am a bit wary of people who channel information especially when they say it is from the Christ.
I received a flier in the mail from a book club that is selling a Bible that is supposed to be a direct interpretation from Aramiac. It supposed to be truer to the words that the Christ spoke. That is if you have faith that those who wrote down what they heard or rewrote what someone else heard are really what he spoke. Put ten people in a room and you will get ten different interpretations of an incident. Never mind some one so essoteric and spiritually advanced as the Christ. This is why I lean towards the Gnostic faith.
Thanks for your words and your faith.
Have you ever seen the movie of the Christ starring Max Von Sydow? The way they present Jesus's teachings is wonderful. I have gotten some great insights from that movie. They have offset some of the misinformation that I learned while growing up. It's a good movie even for us non-Christians. =D

Nakis, this sounds like it could be some interesting reading, but maybe something that you really have to be in the mood for to get into them??? How many books are there? Have you looked at Barnes&Noble, to see if there are any reviews offered by other readers for these books? That is a good place to find out what others think about a book, or collection of books.
Years ago, I went to Catholic Inquiry classes, and I have to agree with something the priest told me. He said that the Bible was most likely a kind of "campfire stories" or "folk tales" that people told, and they were basically all just word of mouth, until someone finally came along with the skills needed to write these stories down.
I really find it hard to believe that anyone recorded the actual "words of Christ". His teachings during his life weren't all that popular with people until after he was crucified and the resurrected... and people thought that perhaps he really was what he claimed to be... a son of God. At this point, I don't believe that his every word had been recorded from his teachings on earth, so much as I think that what was written was basically from the recollections of various people, including his disciples.
So, while the Bible contains many true stories, etc., I don't take any of it "verbatum". To this, we must also add the many translations it has been through... and today's most-used Bible versions are claimed to be missing some of the books that were originally supposed to have been included. The Bible still remains high on the "best selling books" list around the world, and I think it is probably the best overall text on Christianity. But, it is subject to an individual's chosen beliefs... and my own religion is not actually Christian... it is a combination of many truths that I have found in many places. Some of these truths do come from the Bible.

Nakis- this old witch wants to thank you for being on Christian I feel safe with. As a matter of fact I have read the bible and new testament and still cant figure out where most folks get their interpretations ......but that aside..........

Remember the movie "Billy Jack" where they just think of him and he comes- indian style???? Well- that's how the Christ comes- even to me, an old witch.....that's how I know he's in your heart and not in all those bible words. think about it- jesus is always alive and there to help- those old bible words are dead and gone and they need to be if Jesus is truly what they say he is.
Jesus is not in the written word- no no no!!!
He lives for all today! no matter what the spiritualty! Even for me!

=D
I don't wish anyone to take offense at this.

My most favorite people in the world are people who are open minded enough to accept, acknowledge, honor and even adopt the faiths of other religions and their brothers and sisters. People who may follow a particular faith or not, but understand and love others and their faiths.
Which is one of the reasons why I feel so lucky to be a part of this board.

Thanks for pointing out the barnes and noble book reviews. Amazon has them too. I don't know why I didn't think of that.
I already have the set of books.
I have read many authors who have read the books and done the material. I was hoping for someone a little more in real life. Someone who has no alterior motive when critiquing the book.
If I remember correctly there is the main book, a harbound several hundred page book. Another book that is sort of an aide to the first. And an even smaller workbook. Of I remember they are not cheap. Being well made hardcovers.

Nakis, I can hardly imagine how anyone could take offense to what you said. I am so glad that you chose to be a part of this board. =) Your love and tolerance for others makes you a very special person. You are one of the stars that shines brightly in the constellation of mankind.

It is just the old principle of being able to hold more sand in an open hand than in a closed fist. Love and acceptance are exactly that way. Loving and accepting the faiths that others hold dear is necessary, if we want them to even have a desire to love and accept us in the same manner. My mother always said "What you throw behind you always comes before you". What she meant was whatever you give away to others, be it love, respect, kindness, or material goods.... those things will always be given back to you by others when you least expect it. There is alot of truth to it.... it is just the same as karma.... and it is all so very true.

Blessings,
