Lately the film "Songcatcher" has been getting play on the pay per view channels.
It's a turn of the century story about a woman with a PhD in music who has been passed over for promotion at the school she instructs at simply because of her gender. She decides to go to the Appalachians to do research and collect the music of the folks. What she finds are the purest versions of old folk songs from England and Scotland- some that werent even known in the old world anymore.
It's a real cool story- and as with all mountain stories- involves the local suspicion of the "outlander" and her trials with the mountain ways and the acceptance and respect she finally wins. There is also the perfunctory mass fistfight, moonshine,a killin' and a burryin'. cant have a proper mountain movie without these things now!
It wont win and Oscar but it was very good and we did see it three times! The soundtrack is totally awesome and best of all- Aiden Quinn is the male lead. OOOH!! there's something about that man that sundog likes! It was filmed right where we lived in and about Fairview and Asheville- sorta around and down the mountain and over a bit to the west.We loved seeing the mountains again- especially while sitting in our living room in florida!
