I just learned last night that Showtime is going to be showing a movie on Fidel Castro (I forgot the date). In theatres right now is Black Hawk Down - the movie about the US (marine?) helicopter that was shot down in Somolia years ago.
While I'm interested in both movies and will surely watch them, I think it's kinda bad timing for films like this to be coming out. Since 9/11, we've seen so much of the world showing their anti-American sentiment and such places are in an increasingly volitile state of mind. American made films - from the American point of view - about people like Castro, the events in Somolia or any other touchy subject like this, I think, are more than likely to make things worse. For instance, Somolia - a possible next target in the war - showed a bootleg copy of Black Hawk Down and the crowds were cheering when the helicopter went down or when an American soldier was killed.
What might the cubans think when the Castro film is shown? I think it just incites people to 'riot' - which we certainly don't need right now in the middle of a war and need as much global cooperation as possible. What's Castro to think and do when on the one hand we ask for his cooperation in this war against terror, then we show a film that shows how nasty he has been in the past? I understand it's the truth, but - this might be compared to calling someone as a**hole while you're shaking their hand!
Am I making any sense? Maybe it's too early...
What do you think?
