I'm up late (or early!) and was answering an email when I heard a man's voice from one of my new computer speakers! It's the bass speakr that sits on the tower. I couldn't make out what was said, but it was about 5 words or so. I've heard something similar since I put these speakers in (after Christmas), but it was much quieter and shorter in length - I just wrote it off. az was sitting beside me at her computer with her head turned the other way and she heard it too.

Is there a chance that speakers can pick up radio stations or cell phones?? I wouldn't think so, but wanted to see what y'all thought. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen?

My neighbor had a CB years ago and he bought some sort of power booster. I could hear his side of the conversation through my sterio speakers even if my sterio was turned off. Luckily I recognized his voice and he was able to adjust his booster so it didn't happen.

Thanks guys! I had a feeling it was something of that nature. In fact, I'm thinking it was possibly a police transmission - the guy sounded so official! =P

CB are only supposed to operate on 4 watts of power. Unless the antenae transmitting the signal is right next to an unfiltered electronic unit with a speaker of any sort it won't effect it. But like Connie said if someone has a booster set up they can transmit pretty far. Some boosters are 400 watts. The size of a small radio station. They can also be DC powered portable boosters. So some one could have drove past your house with a high powered CB and transmitted through your speakers. Is there someone in your neighborhood with a white rod antennae? It will be between 4 and ten feet long sticking straight up. Is there someone around with what looks like and old TV antannae? The beam style antannaes look just like old TV antannaes except they are a little to alot bigger and have an extra little part just above or below the main antannae array.
Many of my friends used to be into CBs alot. Several used to transmit 'skip' or long distance. Which required the high power transmitters.
Some official or commercial vehicles may have been real close to you speaker 100 -200 feet and caused that effect. It may have been a state trooper. I think their radios are more powerful that local police due to the distances they travel. Normal 4 watt transmitters will go a max of about 4 miles in good conditions (no buildings, hills, etc..) between transmitter and receiver.

I will have to take a look outside at some of the rooftops around here. I really haven't looked very closely of late.

We live on a fairly busy street. Open the front door and it's only a few yards away. The freeway is only a block or two in the same direction. So yes, it's probably a commerial vehicle or police/state trooper like you said. =)

I think the mystery is solved. I just heard more voices in my speakers and then heard the police helicopter overhead. Too bad it's not clearer - I'd have my own personal police scanner instead of having to plug in the real one!
