I just discovered that Coyote Oldman, who does NA flute music on CD's that is just terrific, also makes flutes!!!
I discovered that the place where I bought my Navajo boots (Kaibabs) sells flutes actually made by Coyote Oldman. Now, that would be so cool, to have one of those, and learn to play it! See the flutes at:
I found a guy here in Western Mass. that makes NA flutes. His company is called Early Light Music. He has a little shop in a Arts and Crafts complex in a little town called Everett. He makes about a dozen different styles in different types of wood. I picked a one of his least expensive ($180.00) flutes and least complicated. They range up to about $4-500 dollars. I don't know if that is really expensive for NA flutes.
He hand makes them with hand tools not much different than the Native Americans did.
I really like mine. I made a case for it out of some PVC tubing. I made wooden end caps that fit in the ends like a key(metal tabs) so they lock and won't fall out and let my flute fall out. I took some old jean material and made a covering for the outside (so it doesn't look like a PVC tube) and lined the inside with flannel material so my flute doesn't get battered around. I made a strap out of the denim jean material and I take it out hiking with me sometimes. I like to find an isolated spot or wait until near dark (when/where no one is around to disturb) to play it.
Though I always get strange looks from other hikers when they see the case. Most people are afraid to ask what it is in case it's something dangerous and I'm some sort of psychopathic nutcase.
'Oh hi' 'what that thing you have there?'
"Oh that? that's a LARS rocket, want to see how it works, RUN!!! =D  =D
But I can't blame people for being cautious and defensive with all the things you hear in the news.
ooh how cool!! i have a coyote oldman recording in my native flute music collection which has gottne way out of hand- it needs a whole box to contain them.
I find that the Native flutes can do so much to open up your energy, your soul.
I studied westertn classical music on the piano and bassoon for many many years. it was always something that my family pushed for money making. this ruined it for me so I switched to fines arts- and they promptlbegan their controlling bs with that and ruined it as well.
then one day We were in a little store called dream street and there were some cedar flutes! we were perplexitating over which one to buy when an old man walked right in and up to us- picked one up and played it and said this one is sweet buy this! he breifly told us me made them somewhere up there in the northeast- I think massachussetts. he looked sorta of indian but he looke sorta like a wolf too. I looked at his hands/paws as he handed us the "good" flute and his nails were sharp claws with points. he truned and walked away as suddenly as he came in. Don,I and Diane English- the store owner- stood there stunned. Well- that was the first flute out of the 4 more to come.
the one I have now is made by rick sampson- and it is a simple walnut beauty that plays itself. I find that all the rules of traditional whitey music dont apply simply because our "scale" is not there. these flutes can take you to places......just shut your eyes and go. they gave the true meaning of not only music back to me but the true and magickal purpose of all the arts.
thanks to the wolf-man from the woodlands!
man- that was the stangest thing - well almost- that ever happened to us!
Sungod, where did you meet this guy? Where was the store? This guy, a really nice personalable guy, travels up and down the east coast selling his music and I think flutes. He doesn't make too many and I think most of them are made on commission like mine. Maybe you met him.
nakis- I am only really sure that the state began with an 'M' ans he was from the northeast. He wasnt too tall-maybe 5'10"- white hair, no beard, wore a dark blue short jacket and a dark blue ball cap. his features were sharp- and so were his nails!! just like claws!
he just walked in and did his thing and told me how to use a different finger cuz i had hurt my small finger and couldnt reach the hole at the time. then he left- real sudden like. he looked like a wolf to me- he didnt really- but he did. um- ya know what I mean sorta?
