This goes right in line with Connie's post from the other day warning us to beware of what we pick up at flea markets and garage sales.
About a month ago, a friend of mine who brings me some of her flea market things to paint and repair (I referred to her in one of the "Creative" posts), brought me two rather old looking wooden busts of Oriental women. Judging from the look of them, I would say they were from Thailand, hand carved, and very unusual. She brought them to me because the wood was split and a little damaged. Well, I let them sit for a few weeks, with everyone coming in telling me they gave them the creeps (even my non-psychic, skeptic husband remarked "I'll be glad when you get rid of those things."). They had not bothered me in the least until I started working on them, doing the repairs. It seems like everytime I start working on them, I start hearing bumps and knocking around the house, and my pulse starts racing. This has only happens when I work on these two heads!!
I don't know if something is attached to these things are not. I would say they represented some type of goddesses. One is very serene looking and the other has an odd little smile. I can tell they were meant to be displayed together. After my friend picks them up, should I sage the house? Like I said, everything is peaceful as long as they aren't being bothered. Should I just wait and see if anything seems to linger before I do anything? I've picked up vibes from things before, but this is pretty odd! Connie, your advise was a little late for me!

Take a picture of them. I would love to see them, with my oriental background I am interested. Also, you may get an orb or ecto if you do. Just a suggestion.

"Weird" and "odd" are not words I would use to describe what's going on in your home! Creepy, scarey! =O!
I do believe that you should sage the home after the heads are gone. You might also have luck with asking the heads to "behave" (for lack of a better word) while you're working on them. Telling the spirits that you are merely repairing them and mean no harm. If you've upset something by working on them, them maybe explaining your intentions might do the trick. Keep us posted!

I agree with Miss Grrl, talking to the heads might just quite them down; however, I'm wondering if you shouldn't do some research before you fix them. Definitely send Pandora a picture, it couldn't hurt to know a little about their history. They may be trying to warn you that you're about to distroy their value (antique road show influence - some things are more value without the fixes). =O!

=O! Carrie!

What is it about disembodied heads that spooks us?

Really though, I have to wonder if they aren't trying to tell you something. Along with what has already been mentioned, another thing comes to mind: If they are goddesses, could it be you don't have the right ancestry, therefore 'the right', to do repairs on them? Just a thought.

I like Miss Grrl's idea of telling them you mean no harm by doing repairs. If the noise keeps up, maybe that isn't their concern. I'd do a smudging when they're gone. Might not hurt to do it before and after you work on them as well.

Do keep us posted! I'd love to see pics too!

You could individually smudge both of the heads. Take them outside (so that negativity taken away by the smoke can't linger in your house), and hold the head in a way that you can pass all parts of it through the smoke, in the meantime, offering a prayer, and asking the smoke to carry off all negativity within each head. This is a method used to purify crystals, and I can see no reason why this wouldn't work for wood, as well, since both are natural substances. You might also burn a white candle near you while you work on them. That adds positive vibes to the room. Just some thoughts.... the smoke purification works well on my crystals I use for healing.

Thanks guys, Azspirit, I like that idea, I think I'm going to try doing that. I will get some pictures of them, I tried last night, but my camera batteries were kaput! When I go to the store this week, I'll get some and send the pics into Kell. I'm curious about what the heck they are. After looking at the bottoms I'm wondering if they weren't cut off from a larger statue. They look like they are carved from teak wood. When I first saw them, I just loved them and thought about asking to buy them from the lady. After tinkering with them, I don't think I'd want to keep them full time!
Connie, the repairs are minute, mostly cleaning. The same thought entered my mind about decreasing value, so I'm just filling in places that hopefully won't be so noticeable!

This is Kuan-Yin, a popular Oriental Goddess. Although there are several different depictions of her, does it resemble either of the ones you have?

Nope, that's not it. I did buy some batteries today and hopefully can take the pics tonight. These look more Thai to me. I think they may be fairly modern, less than 50 years I would say, but that is just a guess. I'll be interested to see if Pandora or anyone might recognize what they are.

I was just surfing the search engines and came up with a different train of thought. How about life sized puppets - aren't puppet shows pretty popular with oriental cultures?

Here's a site I found that tells you how to make these puppets and the beginning narative talks about "life sized" puppets. There is a picture of a finished puppet - does it look anything like your heads?

Here are pictures of Carrie's 'heads'. Personally, I don't find them creepy.... I don't get any bad vibes at all. Or at least not since I've been looking at these for a brief time. =D

What do you think, Pandora? Kuan Yin? Er?

Looking at the pic's I get the sense that the top head is that of a male... the head dress is different and above the lip it seems there is the "hint" of a moustache. The second one is clearly a female.
So my question is this: do they knocks and pings and noises occur when you "mess with" the top one, the bottom one or both? =(

I'm with Kell that I don't sense any boogedies from the pictures, but I do get the feeling these are royalty like maybe husband and wife? =\ I think that Kell might be onto something about having "the right" to do any repairs. In any case repairs must be made and so saging and smudging and talking to them as we've all mentioned might be your best best. I would LOVE to hear anyone else's take on the heads?!

Hey guys,
I've got to admit, after looking at the photos, they really don't look so weird. I promise though, the two days I worked with them, there were odd bumping noises coming from the hall and guest bedroom. I kept looking over my shoulder, thinking I would see something. It may have just been coincidental, because that bedroom has been the source of a lot of our activity. I guess I associated the noises with working on them, but it may have been something else entirely!
Miss Grrl, it was the first one that I was cleaning and examining when all of that started.
From what I can tell, I don't think it is a moustache on that one, but rather an odd little way her upper lip was carved in a smile.
I didn't think anything of them at all until everyone who came in the house commented that they gave them the willies, of course, a few of those folks say my whole house gives them the willies!
I'm interested if anyone has a clue as to what they are!

I agree that that it's a male and female. I don't think they are gods/godesses though. I just don't recognize them. Could be Cambodian or Thai. In oriental culture it can be difficult to tell the difference. I have photos of traditional Thai dancing the males are made up very much like the females.

very interesting thread!
this reminds me of the room in the Cleveland Museum of Art that contains carved masks from africa and the south seas. That room truly gives me the chills. Notice how you feel the next time you find yourself in a museum around artifacts. That room is so powerful that I dont spent too much time in it.There's also some stuff in ripley's Beleive it or Not in St.Augustine that literally gives me the creeps- as well as the old hotel the displays are in. wow- is that place a hot spot!

Hey Sundog -- good to hear from you again! I know just what you mean about museums and such. I had just gone a few weeks ago to a small museum in Jefferson, Tx. (Good ghost stories all over that place!), and experienced that very thing, especially around some of the old clothing. I think sometimes that our feelings and attachments must permeate the fabric, wood, etc... of these objects. When so many of these items are placed in museums and exhibits, it is a little overwhelming.

I get the same willy vibes from old clothing stores - esp. in an antique clothing shop. Can't stay in there for very long at all.

Any new noises, Carrie?

Nothing for the last few days, maybe it was something else? It sure was insisting on getting attention there for a while!
