We used to try this at slumber parties in junior high all the time and yes, most of the time we ended up giggling too much to get it to work. One person would lie down and one person would be the "leader" and sit at her head everyone else would sit on her sides and put two fingers under her. And the leader would say something like "her lies the body of (girl's name) she died (some gruesome/sad way)" and so forth to set the mood.
I remember one time when it did work. I had this one friend who's birthday was in October so for her birthday we would go to a local haunted house and that got us in the mood for spooky stuff at her slumber party afterwards. So we tried with the birthday girl as the body. I remember they made me speak because they thought I was the serous one (I was painfully shy and didn't talk much) We actually lifted her pretty high. We stood and got her to just above our waists. Pretty freaky when you're 13. She felt pretty light; there were probably 3 girls on each side so I don't know if it was an even distribution of weight or if she went into some kind of self induced trance.
Now, I never did want to try summoning Mary Worth. I always hid when they did that one.
