Hello, I'm new here. I have been doing genealogy for the past 2 years and have discovered 2 ghosts on my family tree. One is right here in South Carolina. Her name is Alice Flagg. I haven't been to her plantation or grave site, yet, but I am planning on it. Then I found one in MA. Martha Bowker married my cousin, Robert Keyes, and they had children. Lucy Keyes was one of them. Lucy disappeared and Martha went insane (so the story goes), now she searches for her lost daughter. Sure is interesting what one finds while digging up their roots.

Hi Miss Lavendar! Welcome to SpiritKeep! [Smile]

So, in researching your family history, you've run into 2 relatives that have ghost stories connected to them? How interesting! Wow, I'd love to hear more on their stories when you find out more about them. What dates are you looking at here? Are they both in SC?

Thanks for sharing with us. That is very interesting. I am curious if the ghosts will recognize you as a relation if you visit. I guess it really depends on the type of haunting, but it would be a good thing for you to take lots of pictures when you visit those places. Follow your instincts and take pictures, even if you do not see anything! Then tell us all about it!

Hi Kell and Kathleen, Here is the story:

Ghost #1: Her name was Alice Belin Flagg. (1833-1849) The Flagg family originally came from MA, but this branch had moved to SC. Near Georgetown. Alice was my 4c5r. She was a proper Southern girl. Her family had high hopes for her. But she followed her heart and fell in love with a Lumberjack, much to the dismay of her family. He gave her a ring that she wore on a piece of cloth around her neck. Her father died when she was young, so it was her mother and brother, Allard. When Allard found out about this fellow, he sent his sister to Charleston to a private school. She became very ill and was sent home. In her delirium, Allard noticed the ring around her neck. He yanked it off and through it in the marsh. Later, when Alice woke up, she reached for the ring and it was gone. 2 hours later she died. They say you can see her ghost, searching for the ring. Her story is on AllAboutGhosts, in the States/South Carolina section.

Ghost #2: Her name is Martha Bowker. (1720-1789). Martha married my cousin, Robert Keyes. One of their daughters, Lucy, was my 3c7r. When Lucy was 5, she disappeared. They lived in Princeton, MA. Martha nearly went insane. No trace of Lucy was ever found. After Martha died, her neighbor wrote a confession just before he died. It seems they had a land dispute, or something. The neighbor, killed the little girl and buried her near the root of a big tree. They say, that to this day,you can hear Martha, calling "Loo-See" searching for her daughter. This is also on the same site as Alice under States/Massachusetts.

I doubt if I will ever make it up to MA, but I will definately go and check out Alice. I wonder if she will recognize me as being kin. But I will take a lot of pictures. I take care of my MIL who is quite ill, but I will make arrangements to be gone for a couple of hours. Her headstone still stands there. The family was so ashamed that all they had on it was her name "Alice" no last name or dates.

How interesting this is! WOW! It would be great to find just one person in one's family tree who is a 'famous ghost', but TWO of them would really be something special. It is good to see evidence of the paranormal and genealogy being coming together in such in interesting way. I am fond of researching both, and I think you have discovered some real gems in your family's roots, Miss Lavender. Hooray for you!!! [Wink]

Like most of my really neat genealogy, I ran across the ghosts by accident. Who knew? I have checked other places, but so far these are the only 2. But I am related to a lot of people, so I expect that I might find more. My husband made the comment that I have Witches on my tree, why not Ghosts, too. My family was in the Salem Witch Mania of 1692. But I will let you know when I get pictures and if I find any other Ghosts on my tree. Seems I have a very colorful ancestors. [Smile]

Indeed you do have colorful ancestors!

Hey, I noticed in the story about Alice that you said she fell in love with a lumberjack and the story as printed on AAG says she fell in love with a traveling salesman. Any idea which one is correct?

And wouldn't it be nice to get a cut of whatever profits will be made on Lucy's movie!? [Razz] http://www.lucykeyes.com/[/URL]

P.S. I sent you an email too. [Wink]

The story I found on the interent, says it was the lumberjack, John Braddock. I didn't hear about any salesman. Interesting though. I understand she was a very beautiful girl and probably had many men who wanted to marry her. I get to thinking about it and I am saddened by the fact that Social Status was more important than true happiness. If her family had let things progress naturally, things would have been far different. I also noticed that when I began adding that branch to my tree, Allard, Alice's brother, had a daughter, whom he named "Alice".

There is also going to be a movie about Alice in the coming year!!! I plan to get it and Lucy's, to add to my ever growing collection of Videos.
