I've got some mixed feelings on the death penalty. Of course, I don't think it should even be given consideration unless there is 100% proof that the person is guilty, and I believe in the Westerfield case, there is. On one hand, with a criminal like Westerfield who has committed an act so heinous and unthinkable, giving him the death penalty almost seems like the easy way out. Let some of those fellows in that prison know that he murdered a defenseless little child and let him spend the rest of his days dealing with what some of those folks would dish out to him. Like we have discussed before in other posts, inmates have their own oddball code of ethics and rapists, child molesters, etc... are not thought of with warm regard in that system.
However, Cindy does make a very valid point: We are getting so many people who commit crimes like this in the prison system that it is an incredible burden on the taxpayer. I personally object to these guys having tv's, being able to form bands, and a lot of what I would consider outrageous freedoms. I'm not saying drag them out and beat them everyday, but I'm all for going back to the times when prisons were self-sufficient. Let them grow the foods they eat, sew the clothes they wear...and forget trying to find ways to entertain them and making their stays a little too cozy!!
I do feel that some folks in prisons can be rehabilitated, but I also feel it is a relatively small number. I would much rather my tax dollars go toward making sure an elderly person had medical care, or a small child had three nutritious meals a day.
Had Westerfield done that to my child, I would have wanted him off the face of the earth. I think this creep is getting what he richly deserves.
