This was just about 30 years ago and my mother and I still think about it to this day. My apologies in advance for the length.

My mom and I had just come from seeing a special showing of Gone With the Wind. The movie was air conditioned, but by the time we waited for the bus and walked the 3 blocks from the bus stop to where we had the encounter the effects of the air conditioning had long worn off.

It was a hot humid August night. The temperature was still in the 80's at 10pm. We know this cause the bus stop is next to a gas station with a thermometer. We walked the 3 blocks which brings us along side the Long Island Rail Road trestle that crosses Jamaica Ave. The block in question is a short one, a combination of residential and business. The tracks are on a very steep hill and the houses that line the tracks are at the foot of the hill. It was totally deserted, even the trafic on the Ave was non existant at that time of night.

As we approached the corner we hit a pillar of ice cold air! We both stopped dead in our tracks. We spent 15 minutes, walking around it, looking for a possible source. It was well defined, we could circle it with our arms, it went straight up as far as we could reach. It did not move. We were along side the tracks, not under the trestle. The office building across the street was closed, and their air conditioning unit located on the side was off. The closest house was 40 feet away. We even looked for another person to confirm what we felt. There was no one around.

I know that back around Thanksgiving 1954-55 this was the scene of one of the worst train wrecks in the history of train wrecks. To this day it is still considered one of the worst. There were many deaths and the injured were brought to the houses along the tracks. There was a station there until that happened. The remains of the stairs were still visable at the time. We had just passed the stairs.

My question, if the cold spot was paranormal in nature, why August? True you would not notice it in November but still. We only felt it that one time. We walked past that spot many times on a daily basis, to school, the supermarket, church, bus stop and never felt it before or since. I grew up knowing about the history of this spot but never gave it a thought until that moment. And despite many efforts never had that experience again.

Wow Jeanie...What an interesting story...To answer your question in my post...yes I felt so unwanted when I felt the cold spot...I don't know why! I have grown up here but I don't know much about the area where we were! Maybe one day we both will have some answers!

It may have to do with your sensitivity.
Perhaps there was an energy reaction to you and your mothers energy. The stored energy in the area responding to your energy/sensitivity.
A not very good analogy would be warm air over cold wet ground causing a fog.
If there was any intelligence behind the column of coldness then maybe it responded to your sensitivity.
My guess is that the energy is there. When you came by being able to sense it, it reacted to you and your mother.

I remember reading somewhere that paranormal activity reaches a high point during the warm summer months. Maybe it was more noticeable because of the warm weather conditions. Interesting story!

It's interesting that it was a column that never seemed to move. How strange - I don't know what to make of it! Did you happen to feel the ground in the area of the column and outside of it? Just curious if the ground temps differed as well.

I'd like to add this to the SpiritKeep ghost story page is that's ok with you. [Smile]

Thanks guys.

Nakis, I understand what you are saying, the fog analogy makes sense in terms of why people occasionally feel and see things. I do not consider myself sensative. I seem more intuative. I have never proved my intuitions are correct but I still follow them. Carrie, what few paranormal experiences I have had have occured at various times of the year. So I can't say that is true in my case.

Strawberry, we did not feel welcome or unwelcome...just cold. Even with the history of that spot, I could honestly say I did not feel or sense any emotions. It was just this column of cold air.

Kell, we checked everything but the ground! [Embarrassed] We were so proud of ourselves for taking the time to rule out all the other possibilities. It did not move, we walked across the street, up the block, looking up, we reached up to see how looking around but it was always right where we left it. We left before it did. And yes by all means use the story.
