Forums · How are witches buried?

Does anyone know how they buried a witch? I have heard several people say that they buried them with the tombstone upside down...is that true? I have also heard of a story of a witch buried here in this area b/c the tombstone is upside down...Just wondering!

Hmmm good question and one I can't say I know the answer to, although I'm mighty interesting in finding out. I remember watching something and some point (gosh I'm specific [Laughing] ) and they were talking about burying I think it was a witch at the crossroads outside the town. Think Miranda think think think what was that show. Most likely something on TLC or the like. I'm curious to find out now.

I can't say I know the answer to this, but after doing a little research, that theory (upside down tombstone) may be nothing more than myth. Here are a couple links with a bit of information on witch burials, but it doesn't touch on actually how they were carried out.

I've also written an email to Alison at the Salem Witchcraft Museum to see if she can shed any more light on this subject for us. [Wink]

Theres a story over here about a guy who lived at a place called Box Hill. Box Hill is actually a huge hill and at the top is a gravestone deep in the woods there it states that the person buried under it was buried upside down so that his soul went straight down to hell. I think he was into witchcraft and devil worship. Its said every halloween inthe early hours of the morning you can see his 'ghost' rise from the grave. I dont know if its ever been seen but its supposed to bring instant death if you see him, so despite my friends warning my curiosty got the better of me and a group of us went up there. I'll be honest there was a thick mass of what looked like fog only around the headstone and the strongest feeling of saddness and hate and a deathly silence. We all smellt the foulest smell like sewage but stronger and I suddenly had an overwhelming urge to leave I've never had such an intense feeling. When we did some research we found that a lot of'witches' were buried upside down so that their soul goes straight to hell with no chance of escape. Also a lot of witches were drowned and the body left to fall to the bottom of the river others were burnt alive and there ashes buried on unholy ground. I hope this helps a little.
