Have any of you folks ever had dreams in different languages that you don't know? That happens to me sometimes and it's really weird. Last night I did a search on Kosher food and found a really neat site about Judiasm that had the Hebrew alphabet and I ended up having a dream in Hebrew. It's just the strangest thing because I don't know the language at all but I was able to understand it in the dream. I couldn't tell you for sure that it was the Hebrew language(I don't think I've ever heard it) but I seemed to know in the dream that it was and it sure didn't sound like english. This has happened to me before with other languages as well. It makes me wonder if, somewhere in the brain, we do know other languages that we've only heard a very little of. I can't really decide about it, it could just be dream nonsense but then again who knows what we can do and remember while asleep.

I've thought about this too. I remember once, years ago, waking myself up, repeating an odd sounding word that I was not familiar with. I've even wondered if it may have something to do with a past life.
Maybe just that limited exposure is buried in our subconscious and comes out every once in a while. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has experienced this! [Nutty]

That's interesting, Renee. I don't think I've ever had that happen to me - at least not that I remember. What was the dream setting? Was it here or in another country - or could you tell?

Surely does make you wonder!

I checked Dreammoods and DreamJournal.... between the two, here's what is says about language. I did not find the keyword 'Hebrew'.

Language

To dream that you are studying a language, denotes that you are having difficulties expressing your thoughts.

To hear foul language in your dream, signifies that you will soon find yourself in an embarrassing situation.

LANGUAGE

The ability to communicate with others and make yourself understood. If it is a strange or foreign language it is probably expressing things you feel but have not yet put into words or feel clear about.

Carrie, I'm glad that I'm not alone too. I was starting to think that I was a little nutty.

Kell, I only remember a very little about the dream. I'm pretty sure that I was dreaming about the holocaust. I had been reading Exodus and just before going to bed I was at the part about Dov Landau's history and the Warsaw Ghetto. I can't remember the details of the dream but I woke up very frightened and told myself "Well that's what you get for reading about the Warsaw Ghetto before going to bed". The thing about it is that though I can't remember what was said or even what happened I remember thinking it was weird that I was speaking and understanding Hebrew because even in the dream I knew that I didn't know the language. I don't know if this part was related or not but I also dreamt about tiny little birds, small as you pinky finger. They were babies that we(?) were supposed to feed until they grew stronger. There were a whole bunch of them and everybody got one, seemed to be some type of group project. Sometimes it's hard for me to tell where one dream ends and another begins, especially with a frightening dream because even though I might wake up they will start again when I go back to sleep. I don't think that dreaming in a strange language has anything to do with scary dreams(it hasn't before), I think that this time it just happened to be a frightening subject.

The communication issue that you posted about is pretty interesting. I'll have to try to pay more attention when this happens and see if that may be the cause.
