After reading WingsOnite's thread, I thought I would share some of the interesting haunted sites in San Antonio.
I've taken the ghost walk and it was really a lot of fun. It was funny, we were told to meet at a certain conspicuous spot in front of the Alamo. Everyone was eyeing each other suspiciously -- you realize how hard it is to walk up to a total stranger and ask "Are you here for the ghost tour?" I think we scared off some poor fellow who was just in the park.
Anyway, the tour was a lot of fun. The guides name is Martin Leal, and he has some entertaining stories about some of the haunted places in San Antonio, he also shares some interesting spirit photography and ghost hunting equipment.
We stayed at the Menger hotel, next door to the Alamo and had our own ghostly encounter. The Menger has been the site of several very dramatic ghostly encounters over the years, and hotel staff are very open to listening -- most of them have had things happen themselves. We had a small room in the older part of the hotel. The room itself was nothing fancy, but clean, and overlooked the Alamo. We periodically would have the TV turn on by itself all through the night. We could find no cause for this and thought it was just faulty wiring of some sort. As we discovered, the hotel has had extensive rewiring and no believes some of the odd electrical malfunctions to be paranormal in nature. We also experienced cold spots in the room, another common occurance.
I would highly recommend staying at the Menger -- sitting in the same dining room that Robert E. Lee, various presidents and other historical figures sat, is an amazing experience. This old hotel, and others in the city, have seen a lot of history. Plus, the mango ice cream and the breakfast buffet are not to be missed.
Another fun place to eat is at the little cafe just across from the Menger. A former waitress, now deceased, had the unpleasant and unique distinction of being Hitler's godchild. She passed away several years ago and is rumored to now haunt the establishment.
Anyone who cannot pick up on ghostly presence at the Alamo does not have an ounce of psychic ability. I'm not just saying this because I love Texas, but that is an amazing place. Since childhood, I would feel "something" there, especially in the two small rooms as you first walk in. I've always felt if I were in there and could concentrate long enough, something would materialize. VERY strong emotions tied to that place! The building reeks of sorrow. I guarantee any sensitive will pick up on something.
There are a lot of other incredible stories surrounding these sites and others in San Antonio.
Anyone looking for a great vacation spot, this is it. Lots to see and do, a great place to take the kids, incredible Tex-Mex food and friendly people. Come to Texas, y'all hear!
