Cutting the apron strings – one thread at a time!

I had an anxiety dream the other night that left me out of breath and muscle aching tired when I woke up at 1:30 in the morning. I guess what triggered it was my youngest getting his temporary drivers license last Friday.

It started off with my picking him up at school. I’m sitting in my mini van trying to pick him out of the hundreds of kids rushing by me (it seemed to be my old school in Cleveland – Lincoln). It’s winter out but I finally spot him wearing a muscle shirt with his arm around this little girl – he totally ignores me and walks past the van but I yell at him and he gets in. On the next street over you can head south to the interstate and traffic is separated around a curve by a median strip but instead of the usual curve, I run into a sharp spiral (much like a spiral staircase), it’s all ice and I lose it and end up falling into a pit. The van lands on its tires and nothing seems hurt but I’m facing a brick wall and the only way to drive out is by backing up the steep spiral but the van won’t do it because of the ice. I end up climbing the wall, hand over hand, pulling the van with my legs hooked under the front bumper (superwoman, don’t ya know [Nope!] ). My son gets out to make the van lighter and is suppose to wait for me at the top of the wall. When I finally drag the van up and get in, I spot him running down the road still wearing the muscle shirt and now a pair of jogging shorts (remember, it’s still winter). He doesn’t want to get back in the van and so the dream ends with me driving along side of him running down the road and me screaming at him to get back in this #%@ van.

Hehehehehe!!! Sorry Connie. It's such a cute dream. I know it's your anxiety but it's so full of symbolism.

Your little boy is growing up.

What a great dream!

I know you'll handle it fine. =) =)

OMG, what a great dream!!! I love how you pulled the van up by your legs, you tough momma, you! [Laughing] Yep, your little boy is growing up! [Enthusiatic Grin]

I moved this here because it IS such a great dream - want to be sure everyone has a chance to see it. [Wink]

Connie, this is just the most hilarious dream I have ever heard!!! Soooooo full of symbolism, but the part I love most is the way you got the van back up the icy hill!! You are one STRONG WOMAN!!! ROTFLMAO!!!!!

I hope your kids appreciate how much mental anguish you have to go through here.... having kids learning to drive is one of the scariest things you will ever survive!

Right after our son Dan got his license, and was driving 'by himself', he went to the bank in our little 1976 Bronco. One of the little boxy ones, I am sure you recall them. Anyway, he parked OK, went in and did his business, but when he backed out, he had a teensy problem.......... he hooked our front bumper on the rear bumper of the car parked next to him. OOOPS!!! Well, he went into 'apeshit mode', and was scared to death of what we would think. There was only a tiny scratch on the other car.... but about 1 foot of our bumper on the passenger side was bent forward at nearly a right angle!!!! EEEP!!!!

His thoughts raced, thinking how he could possibly hide this little problem from mom and dad, right! So, he drove over to the bowling alley, and drove up against a block fence, hoping to 'bend it back'.... except there were indications that the fence was going to fall over instead, so he ditched that idea (luckily), and left the fence just leaning a bit, but still standing! He decided to come home and face the music, and we were more appalled that he nearly knocked a big block fence over than anything else. His dad took it to work (he was a mechanic at the Ford dealership), and it was fixed painlessly, and not even reported to insurance. I am just glad that the lady at the bank didn't want her whole car repainted or something. She was mad, but at least sensible... he was just a kid, and the damage was so tiny, she just let it go. Ah, the trials and tribulations of mothers & dads and new drivers!!!! LOLOL

Thanks for your comments guys! I'll survive - teaching the kids to be independent is one thing, actually allowing them to do so is another.
[Shocked]

I think most of the simbols all amount to "running into a brick wall" but believe me, it's not something that I'm consiously doing.
