Denton Road Bridge, Canton.
See Lauren's story below for possible location.
I could not find this on the map, but an email from someone local in the area assures me that it exists. The local history states that, in the late 1800's, a man came home drunk and found his wife with another man. In a drunken jealous rage, the husband killed the man. The wife took their son and hid under the bridge. After the husband disposed of the lover's body, he went looking for his cheating wife. He found her and their son hiding under the Denton Road Bridge. He killed them both. No one knows where the husband disposed the bodies. He was never seen again. At the bridge, people have seen lights that seem to come from nowhere. The lights are supposed to represent the murdered souls of the victims or the lantern of the jealous husband.
05.28.02: Many thanks to Terry for the following story on Denton Road. "I used to live in Ann Arbor and took a trip to Denton Road. This trip changed my whole perspective on life itself. We took a trip to this place that we had heard of through rumours at our school. We crossed the bridge and parked our cars so we could walk back and drink. I actually, with some friends, backtracked on that road; a big mistake. During the walk we heard noises off in the brush which sounded like something was moving toward us! We ran back to the bridge in fear to team up with the group. This is were the story gets interesting. The others didn't believe us and continued to party. One of our friends said "Everybody, shut up!" We all got quiet and nervous. This is were we all -- I state "ALL" -- heard the cries of a baby coming from below that bridge. I'm even getting goose bumps writing this. I couldn't believe my own ears. It sounded very real which would exclude a prerecorded hoax. I got so scared. Some of us were saying, "Let's get out of here," but some of us were curious. Moments later we heard a loud bang, like something struck the bridge, like something hitting the bridge with a huge metal pipe. At that point, tears came out of my eyes and I ran towards the car with everyone else and we bolted out of there. Never again would I dare to go back there. I was eyewitness to that haunting, I tell you. Since that day I have respect and belief for such things."

"Ok, this isn't actually a new location, this is a Denton Road Bridge story. I live in Belleville, about 15 minutes from the bridge. This really freaks me out to talk about, but here it goes. When you drive out to the bridge from Geddes Road, you go quite a ways down the dirt part of Denton Road and it gets really creepy at night. As you approach the bridge, you see the yellow sign that indicates a one lane bridge, but it's practically at ground level because there's a hill right there that you go down before crossing the bridge. It was (no joke) on Friday the 13th in either 98 or 99. My sister's boyfriend was out with friends in a pickup truck, two or three of them were in the back along with a sheet of plate glass. They were driving down Denton and right as they got to the bridge, two bright lights (they thought headlights) appeared out of nowhere headed straight for them. His friend swerved and lost control of the truck; it rolled twice and they were all thrown from the vehical! Luckily, he covered his face with his arms because he had glass shards stuck all up and down them, which would have otherwise been in his face. Nobody was seriously injured, I think one kid broke his leg. But the thing that freaks us out is that they never actually saw or heard another car pass by. It didn't honk or stop, and there was NO evidence of other tire tracks swerving, slamming on the brakes, or stopping and then peeling out of there. My sister won't even turn down that section of Denton Road, which is between Geddes and Cherry Hill; the bridge is just south of Cherry Hill. Meanwhile, I had never even seen the bridge, so my friends and I went out there for my first time right after graduation last year. I was driving and we were telling Denton Bridge stories. One friend said how a local radio station had sent a psychic out there with recording equipment right before Halloween and that through the static you could hear a man's voice say, "You should be dead by now"! Just as she finished saying this, I saw the yellow sign I mentioned earlier, so I knew we were about to go over the bridge. At that moment a black cat ran out in front of the car and looked straight at us, its eyes reflected the eeriest green from the headlights. I slammed on my brakes, yelled "F*** this! I am not going over this f***ing bridge! That was a f***ing black cat I am turning the f*** around!" and did a u-turn right in the middle of the road fifty feet from the bridge. My three friends who were in the car started saying to turn around, don't worry about it, then about 1/2 mile to a mile down the road after turning around we saw a white cat walking across a lawn. They looked at that white cat, up at the full moon in the sky, thought about the hit-and-run accident I had witnessed and stopped for on my way to pick them up, and said "Don't you even think about turning back". We went back about a week later and saw the black cat again on the side of the road in the same spot, but it didn't turn us away that time. Well this turned out to be two stories, but I thought you might enjoy them both. My sister now lives off of Geddes about 20 miles east of Denton Road, and still will not turn down that part of the street, and neither will her boyfriend. They've actually done a lot of construction on that section of Denton Road, and I haven't been down there, but I've been told that they made the road and the bridge wider, so I don't know if it's even all that freaky there anymore but it sure was the last time I was there which was just after July 4th, 2001."
08.19.02: Thanks to Charlotte for writing, "I read the haunting stories about the Denton Road Bridge and they are real! I grew up in Belleville, Michigan. When I was about 18 or 19 years old a group I used to hang out with used to go there and park near the bridge and party. I was sceptical but soon came to realize the tales were all true! After midnight you will hear a baby cry and, yes, there will be lights coming down the road and then they disappear."
02.13.03: Thanks to Brad who writes, "I was reading your Website and came across the story from Lauren (story dated 06.05.02). I recently moved to the area in the immediate vicinity of the Denton Road Bridge. As Lauren reported, there has been a lot of construction in the area. New homes and subdivisions are being built and in December of 2001, Denton road was paved and a new two-lane bridge was built on the site of the old one lane bridge. However, it is apparent that the construction of the new bridge did not force the troubled spirits that were associated with the bridge to leave. The bridge is within walking distance from my home, and in September of 2002, my wife and I were walking down Denton Road at night. Having grown up in the area, my wife was familiar with the legend of the Denton Road Bridge. I, on the other hand, was not aware of the haunted history behind the bridge. At the beginning of our walk, we crossed over the bridge heading south without incident. However, when we later returned to the bridge after having turned around to head home we both saw dim lights in the brush off to the west side of the bridge. At that point, we began to hear the faint sound of a baby crying. The crying got louder as the lights seemed to get brighter. The lights seemed to "dance" in the wooded area west of the bridge. We then heard whispers of many different voices. Among the whispers, we heard the voice of a woman. The voice of the women seemed to be trying to calm the baby and began "shushing" the baby to be quite. At that point, my wife was visibly shaken and insisted that we leave immediately. Once we were home, she explained to me the story behind the Denton Road Bridge. Now that I am aware of the haunting and have apparently witnessed it, I always have an eerie feeling when I cross the bridge, even during the day!"

No surprise some of the former patients have not left. Now an office building, many people report hearing voices at this location, most notably moans and growls coming from the area now used as a playground built for the children of office staff. Lights are also known to go on and off mysteriously.

theater taken a few years ago, people swear you can see the spirit of founder T.J. Ramsdell floating in the air near the balcony seats. Doors close on their own and light fixtures have been known to fall to the ground.

Following story sent in by Chelsea. "My friend and I were walking down her driveway (1/2 mile) and near the end of it we heard a rustling in the bushes. So, of course, we went to investigate. We went and looked and saw a man ten feet behind the bush with what looked like a gun and knife. He looked at us and took out his knife. We ran as fast as we could until we looked behind us and he wasn't there. After that we looked on the internet and found that where her driveway was there were train tracks and one night the train had crashed. Then we looked up passengers on that train the night it crashed. Only few had pictures but, one picture we thought looked familiar. Surely enough, it was the man with the gun and knife."
