Most people probably think of Transylvania, that region in current day Romania as being where vampire myths originated; thanks in large part to an author named Bram Stoker.

But from what I've heard and read Greece and Serbia are actually richer in vampire lore then anywhere else in the Balkans or the rest of the world for that fact.

The best known "true life" vampire story is from out of current day Serbia; that being the story of Arnod Paole.

Actually Vlad the Impaler was the inspiration for the fictional Dracula and there is no actual relationship between him and the legends as I best understand it. The book "In Search of Dracula" goes into pretty good detail about vampire lore and the life of Vlad the Impaler.

I mentioned the story of Arnod Paole - sometimes Arnold; here is a link to that story:

I've also heard that Vlad would drink the blood of his enemies and also claimed to be immortal - vampiresque, I'd say. [Big Grin]

Neither of those links are working. =(

I don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but here is a link that I found interesting. It contains vampire legends from many other countries around the world. My favorite is the one from Australia where a person will 'eventually turn into a furry bush creature.' [Laughing] I guess that beats having Dr. Van Helsing chasing after me. [Roll Eyes] [Big Grin]

Kel,

Just going from the information in the book "In Search of Dracula" this was mentioned by the authors who speculated that this might have stirred up such superstitious fears, but in their research that they did while in Romania they state they found no actual connection between Vlad the Impaler and vampire legends.

Well, whether he should be or not, dear Vlad is entangled in the vampire mythology. [Sigh] Perhaps he'd not have been, had Stoker not (purportedly) used him for the Dracula figure. I found a link on that same Vampyre site with a story about Vlad: http://vampyres.n0rp.org/leglore/vlad.html[/URL]

Snoopy, thank for that link! Very interesting... I'm still reading through it. Some of those are very off the wall! [Nutty]

Here's a very informative
Vampire FAQ[/URL] I found.
