John Keel in his book theorized that the mothman and other creatures like him are watchers and being that warn of a tradgedy. I'm not sure what I think about the whole thing. It is a subject work reading up on though. I still can remember being around 3-4 yrs old and being terrified "red eyes" was going to get me. I guess I had overheard my dad (big paranormal buff) and his buddies discussing Mothman.

So, Miranda...you say that they are not hangin around to taunt people, or harass them, but rather warn them? I must not've come across this theory, but it's not bad. Either way whatever it is, is a spirit. Whether it's good or bad is another story. And also what I'd like to know.

Thanks for the info

I know this topic is a little old but I couldn't help myself from responding to one of my favorite issues.

The first time I heard about Mothman was 20-some years ago. I was in a church scouting group and we were camping somewhere outside Point Pleasant. The story was told to us around a campfire. I don't remember all the details from then, but I do remember coming home and asking about the bridge and when my dad told me it was true that was confirmation enough for me.

Fast-forward to 2001 and the release of The Mothman Prophesies. I watched intently, looking for something familiar from the story and from what I'd learned through the years. Although there were some details alot of what was in the movie was foreign to me. Whether it is Hollywood fluff or stories I'd never heard I don't know.

As for my opinions of Mothman, at first I was like everyone else - the monster terrorized the poor people of that little town and destroyed lives when he brought down the bridge. But after watching the movie a couple of times and reading other stories (I still haven't read the book yet) my conclusion has changed.

Mothman was not out to terrorize. I believe he was looking for people that can sense such beings as himself and was hoping they would understand him. Or maybe he was trying to scare them, but only for a reason: There is impending danger and tragedy ahead. But the people were afraid. They ran, they hid, they did whatever to avoid this thing.

And that is why Mothman stood atop the Silver Bridge moments before its collapse: He was hoping the people would see him and turn the other way. But they ignored him and continued on their way, crossing the doomed bridge in the process. And with the traffic jam and extra holiday traffic, the already-damaged and weakened bridge became overloaded, and we know what happened next.

Mothman's job was done. He'd done everything he knew and there was nothing left for him to do. And so he went on his way...

There is no doubt the Mothman was a scary-looking monster of sorts. But it's not what they look like it's their intent that matters. If Mothman was the vicious monster everyone portrays him to be he would have simply destroyed the people he appeared to, not waited some thirteen months to knock over a bridge.

And about those sandhill cranes... are they an explanation? They are similar to the descriptions given of Mothman and it is possible that some people did simply see the bird supposedly missing from the sanctuary, but there are no explanations for some of the other things that took place that birds of any kind simply are not capable of doing.

The bridge itself was explained upon investigation. Some of the joints were cracked and corroded, weakening with each passing year. The design itself was flawed, and that combined with corrosion and an overload of traffic would bring it down. So Mothman didn't do it - he was simply trying to warn and/or scare the people from going on that bridge.

One last issue: The missing people. There are supposedly two people who were victims of the fallen bridge that have never been found. I believe they are still there, under the bridge. When the debris was cleaned up, it is said that everything was recovered and removed from the river except the roadbed itself. I believe that when the bridge began to collapse and the vehicles and debris fell into the river, those two people did not have time to escape. The roadbed then tumbled from the bridge and onto them and/or the vehicle they were in, crushing and trapping them under it.

And the rest, as they say, is legend...

It wasn't that long KD...believe me, I think I have written much longer posts. Thanks for participating...I think you have a very valid argument. What I was trying to do is gather everyones opinion, and see if there was one common factor in any of them. I am not certain what to make of an occurence like this. But, I have to say that the idea of a warning as opposed to an evil force has intrigued me quite a bit. [Nerdily Unsure]

Thanks, Christine. In some places, had I posted a message that long it would have been like I'd written a book on the subject. But anyway...

I understand what you were trying to do, but I really couldn't give an opinion without an explanation. A long time ago I did believe the Mothman was an evil force, but I wouldn't go as far as him being the Devil himself. Lucifer has better things to do than knock over some bridge in the middle Hicksville USA.

But after seeing the movie and refreshing myself with the actual legend I came to the conclusion that Mothman - good or evil - was not out to destroy but warn of impending destruction. So, I guess in your poll you can say that I favor the Mothman as one of the good guys...

Oh, I can also understand not knowing what to think of such theories. I won't say that I try to find logical explanations for everything but I do check into and research things before claiming something as being some sort of paranormal event. I think it's best for one to check things out before jumping to conclusions, as that not only gives the legend more credibility but it also keeps us from making arses of ourselves - and may well keep us out of the looney bin...

I believe there are opening, points from which things can enter and leave our universe quite at random.there are people too who are -by their intuitive nature- drawn to these places.Things happen here that defy all reason.Sounds, wild screems, strange disks, visions etc etc.I don't think that the apparitions, animals, strange shaped forms that emerge from these places are always fully aware they are here in our time and space. Some of them seem more like a lost cat or dog seeking a way home. Could they be dreams or nightmares replaying themselves out in phyical time and space? And what's more, could they possibly be our very own dreams or nightmares playing themselves out much like the music attached to your greeting cards? I beleive that sometimes like wandering stars,or a young child exploring his own space, they pop in from time to time to say hello, try out the air ,smell a few roses ,ask a few questions (hey man, what's happening!)and when their satisfied they've seen enough,(Gee, did you see how primitive those things were?)_-presto- their gone! Something seem scary? Tell it to "go in Peace" With that ,it realizes you mean it no harm, for it just might think your pretty scary stuff too,and fears for it's own safety. You may have unwittingly created it,and it wants to exist just as bad as you do!It may feel you want to distroy it ,so it fights back with what ever primitive means it has.We are all creators,as God is,was, and shall always be -first and formost -a creator! all things are conceaved in love, even those that seem scary.
