Boy taken from home in DeMotte
By Erin Smith, Journal and Courier
A Jasper County 2-year-old was taken from his DeMotte home Tuesday afternoon, possibly by his noncustodial, biological mother.
DeMotte police, believing the boy to be in extreme danger, issued an Amber Alert for Taylor E. Evans, of the 500 block of Birch Street, around 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The police believe Taylor's mother, Kalene M. Evans, 20, abducted him. She recently lost custody of the boy to her parents, DeMotte police said.
Evans had been visiting the boy at his grandparents' home and just left with him, police said. She was last seen driving a two-door, maroon 1993 Mercury Cougar east on U.S. 30 from Interstate 65 in Merrillville at 2:20 p.m.
Taylor is believed to be in extreme danger because of "the decisions she's making and the people she's around," said Andy Lusby, Taylor's uncle, speaking of Evans.
DeMotte Deputy Chief Thomas Jarrette said Evans' mother indicated that Evans' associates were recently arrested for narcotics. For that reason, the 2-year-old is in danger, he said.
On Tuesday evening the police had received a few leads, said Jarrette. "We're following up on those."
Jarrette said the family doesn't know why Evans would kidnap her son.
Lusby, 19, believes his sister abducted Taylor "because she's been under the influence of drugs."
Lusby said the family had just returned from testing Taylor for preschool. Evans said she wanted to take Taylor to lunch and to get a haircut.
"Mom told her 'No,'" Lusby said.
Evans went into the garage on the pretense of getting some of her belongings, he said. "Mom looked out the window and saw her leaving."
Taylor's grandmother, Linda Lusby, who has custody of her grandson, followed Evans' vehicle north on I-65 to Merrillville but was unable to stop her.
The boy's description
Taylor is 2-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 32 pounds. He has blond hair, blue eyes and a 1-inch scar on his belly. He was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt and denim shorts.
Evans is 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. She has blond hair and blue eyes. The car she was driving had an Indiana license plate number of 37 E 2179.
The Amber Alert, which stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response Alert, is a program designed to help locate abducted and endangered children within the first 24-hours. It was established in Indiana on Oct. 1, 2002.
