Going through the posts on this message board i noticed there wasn't any topic on Gettysburg Pennsylvania one of the most haunted places In the United States. During the American Civilwar 1861-1865 Gettysburg was the scene of the bloodiest battle on American Soil. Over 50,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed there.
Their are also a bunch of ghost sightings and hauntings. For example at Devils Den in Gettysburg National Military Park where the rocks ran red with the blood of confederate general John Bell Hood's Texas and Georgia Troops, Their are many sightings of Scruffy Texas soldiers who died defending the area from union soldiers. Also Their is another story of two young ladies who went to tour the Battlefield park. They were walking through the park when one of the young ladies noticed her friend was stepping over unseen objects like she was trying not to step on something. When the young lady asked her friend what she was doing her friend turned to her wide eyed and scared saying "Don't you see them?" The young lady didn't know what her friend was talking about. "See what?" the young lady said. "The wounded soldiers her friend said" "They're begging for water and help" But i can't help them her friend began to cry and they left the park. Later that day the young ladies friend came back with roses to give to the wounded soldiers but of course they weren't there. There are also stories of Phantom drums and fifes playing in the distance and the sound of troops marching when nothing is really there.
Well I hoped you enjoyed some of the ghost stories from Gettysburg. if you know any ghost stories on Gettysburg or other civilwar ghosts please post it.

Hi Aric and welcome to SpiritKeep! =)

We've discussed Gettysburg before, but much of it may have been on our old message board or isn't showing here now (only topics from the last 100 days are shown by default, but you can do a search in this forum for Gettysburg and/or change your topic view preference in your profile).

At any rate, yes, Gettsyburg is quite haunted! Have you had any experiences there? We'd love to hear about them if you have. I believe Gettysburgmary (another member here) has experienced hearing the drums on one of her visits to the battlefield. I've never been, but would love to go someday. =)

You might want to check out a series of 5 (though I think there may be a 6th book now, I'm not sure) books entitled "Ghosts Of Gettysburg" by Mark Nesbitt. They are wonderfully creepy stories of hauntings in and around Gettysburg, at the battlefield itself and some other places.

I have all 5 in the series and its great reading; being an avid History buff myself with great interest in the American Civil War in particular, I enjoyed these books immensely.

Other books on Civil War ghosts I have are:

-Ghosts and Haunts of the Civil War by Christopher K. Coleman
-Battlefield Ghosts by B. Keith Toney
-Civil War Ghosts and Legends by Nancy Roberts.

I hope this helps. =)

Aric, my husband did Civil War reenacting for several years. Reenactors love a good ghost story!
As for Gettysburgh, James and I have not, as yet, been able to visit; but hope to some time in the future.
I have heard of one story from another reenactor. It took place, of all places, in a gift shop near the battlefield. It seems this fellow was in the shop, when a young man, in his teens, let out a yell from the racks of t-shirts. It seems that he had encountered an apparition of a young soldier in the aisle. According to this fellow, it was not the only experience that particular gift shop had.
Everyone I have ever spoke to regarding Gettysburgh says that whether or not you actually see or hear something, you can't deny the feelings imprinted on that battlefield. I think just about everyone walks away from Gettysburgh with a good ghost story.

I was watching a program on I think THC about the ghosts of Gettysburg. There was one claim by one or two women to have ridden down the elevator of an old building and when it stopped and opened they viewed a civil war hospital scene in which one of the doctors motioned for them to come over and help.

I JUST got home from Gettysburg today! we spent the weekend there and had some very good results! We recorded several EVP's at Sach's Covered Bridge and in the Wheatfield and we also got quite an amazing photo in the woods near Triangular Field. I just uploaded the picture and a zoomed in view of it to my webhost, you can see it at:
http://www.geocities.com/berks_paranormal/megs-soldier.jpg[/URL]
and the zoomed in view is at:

I'll have them up on the site along with the EVP's in the next few days.

Awwww... I clicked on the Berks links and got "page not available". I'd really like to see these pics... I'm going back to Philadelphia in a few weeks and have planned to go to Gettysburg for all an all day visit. Hopefully, I can catch some things on film. Now, I'm really excited about it. [Jumpin!]

Sorry about the Page Unavailable message. We're the featured website on AllAboutGhosts.com this month and the amount of hits we are getting is putting us over our hourly bandwidth limit on Geocities. The good thing is that the site only goes down for one hour and then comes back online so check back in an hour or so and the pics will be up. In the very near future we are going to be changing webhosts, I'm finally going to stop being cheap and get a better server rather than using the free server =)

I am a huge Civil War buff. When my dad was alive it was always our thing to go to Gettysburg every year and hang out. It was my dream to go last year and spend July 1,2, & 3rd there. But my dad passed away and I didnt get that chance. I hope maybe next year I can go and enjoy the experiences again.. and I know my dad will be there with me! I got to go to Antietam Battlefield last year twice. It was a real treat for me. I have a few ghostly experiences. Ive heard screams and crys both at Antietam and Gettysburg. And I always get an uneasy feeling walking over the hollow grounds where so many men died. Ive taken many many photos of both places but nothing has ever showed up in my pictures. Maybe I wasnt looking hard enough. HeHe. I also love doing artwork of the battlefields.. I paint and use chalk.. Mostly. I have this photo of my dad at the top of Devils Den looking out over the hill.. and it just looks like my dad fits soo well into that photo. It kinda makes you feel uneasy. But its an amazing photo. He always wanted to reenact. But never got the chance. He actually knew a few men that reenacted the Gettysburg movie. I always thought that was neat!

Just had to share. =)

I had three things happen to me when I was in the movie "Gettysburg".When I went down there to be in the film I was to meet with two other men at an Econo lodge which is just over the hill from cemetery ridge, just below the arched gate house. It was about four in the morning.and it had just stormed really bad. As I drove up the hill I noticed someone to my right half running, half walking. I remember having to bend my head down slightly so I could see him. It was still windy, with a light rain.As I looked up at him I slowed down to see who was in such a rush four a.m. on a windy rainy morning. As I aproached,he suddenly turned towards me,and I could see he was wearing some sort of short shell jacket, and no hat.He looked to be in his teen, with short cropped hair.I caught his face two or three times ,but on seeing me he started to run. There was what I can only discribe as a "look of sad dispair" on his face, almost a pleading dispair. I drove over the hill to the motel , down the hill,-only seconds away- turned around, and waited to see if he would come.I watched in my rear view window ,and I know he never crossed the street. The only place he could have vanished into was the grave yard! I sat there in the dark feeling very alone!

Here is a really neat story I think all you "Gettysburg " freaks will like. When I was in the movie Gettysburg I heard alot of ghost stories flying around. This is one good one I think you'll all like.It was in the morning ,and I was in camp.We had a huge tent set up for meals ,and lots of tables to sit at to eat.(By the way, they feed you like hell on these movie sets) Really do a good job! Well, while sitting down eating my breakfast I saw a bunch of " Hard core "reinactors standing away from the tent, eating some breakfast. It surprised me that they were even there. They had their full field packs on ,(knapsacks, cartridge boxes.etc etc.) They do an excellent interpretation of the civil war soldier. Well, these guys do it by the books.Where we had flash lights in our tents, they used 1860's vintage matches, oil lamps, etc. In other words --nothing modern -period!.I happened to over hear one of these guys telling a "Modern" reinactor a tale that was flying around their camp. I'll try to tell it as best I remember, after all these years. Their camp was separate from ours,as they wanted to interpret the war in a realistic setting. I applaud them! Well,if I remember their camp was up a hill from ours, near the top, along a power line clearing.(Not sure about this). Anyway,at night they posted "Pickkets"(guards) around the camp, just as they would have in the old days. The last regiment in line was just below the top of the ridge, and of course there was the faithful soldier maning his post two a.m. in the morning, just as they did in the old days. Well,in marchs a regiment(well, your a little late aren't you?) ,sets up camp, starts fires, but doesn't post a dam pickket, not a single one! In fact one of the recently arrived soldiers has started a fire ,made some coffee, and is now offering our soldier on duty some of that very coffee. Of course, as a true blue union soldier our pickket on duty is flabergasted to find this shabby state of afairs, refuses the coffee, then promptly marches (Hurries) himself down the hill to his superiors tent. What!!!! NO pickkets? He Offered you what? What the hell's this army coming to soldier? Up the hill goes the officer from hell, followed closely by our angel of inlightenment. Of course ,you guessed it. There was not a trace of anything coming even close to a campsite. No tents,no soldier ,and most importantly ,no coffee!

I was walking around the the base camp we had set up at the base of "Our" little round top. Part of the 20th Maine i was still early in the morning ,and the sun had just broken over the trees. Our muskets were stacked, and we were all relaxing waiting for our call to arms.Chamberlains brother was busy getting his make-up on,in a tiny trailer up the hill alittle from our resting area.I desided to take pictures, and as dumb as I was I forgot in my haste to get some film, and I only had a few pictures left. As I walked around I was trying to get as much "bang for my buck" as I could, when I stumbled into this really neat shot of all the rows of muskets lined up for a hundred yards or so.A soldier was walking towards me ,and another talking to him- walking on the other side of all the guns. When i got my pictures back ,there, flowing in and out ,in and out of all the guns superimposed over everything, was this flowing light that could be seen going from far away right up to the foreground.!My camera has a red light Won't take picture) and a green light,(will take picture, everything ok)so the green light had to be on before it would take the picture.
