Hello everyone, brand spanking new and first time poster. I read the entire movie board the other night and have to say, a lot of the movies being chosen as great are really quite crappy on the creepiness scale. I agree with whoever mentioned The Changeling though, fantastic ghost film and extremely creepy.

Even if you didn't like The Ring, you should remember that it was a remake of a JApanese movie, Ringu, and actually as remakes go not too bad at all. The good news is that Japan is having a renaissancse right now in fantastic ghost/supernatural films, and theres a few that deserve your viewing, if you can track them down.

Suicide Circle - one of the most intense and shocking opening scenes ever, and definitely worth a watch despite a strange endgame.

THe next 3 are from one man, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and he is proving himself a modern master!

Seance - very creepy and twisted film about an unethical psychic trying to track down a missing girl.

Cure - A spate of identical serial killings are all committed by separate individual people who are found dazed at the scene of the crime. Good supernatural thriller stuff.

Pulse - why are people all across Toko taping up their doors with red tape and being found dead the next day? Complex and visionary stuff here, probably the pick of the bunch.

Anyway, nice to be here and looking forward to some lively discussions!

Thanks for the info UberManc. I'm a good (emphasize good) creepy story fan and a Japanese film fan.
Is Kiyoshi related to Akira Kurosawa?

I'll definitely have to check out your recommendations. Thanks.

UberManc, I couldn't find Suicide Circle. I found Suicide Club though. Are they one and the same or different. Suicide Club is a Japanese film about rampant suicides in Tokyo. It is described as a stylish thriller.

I couldn't find Pulse, Cure or Seance on DVD Planet at all. Do you know a place to get them?

Hey Nakis - yes, you found the right movie. I believe it was given two titles because of a not-quite-accurate translation from the original Japanese title. But that's the one!

As for finding the others, that will be a lot harder for sure. The regular retailers definitely won't carry them. There is a place where I used to live in Seattle that is famous for bringing over foreign DVD's on our region discs though, called Scarecrow Video. They had copies of Battle Royale for sale last year when no-one else did. Also, E-bay is worth a shot as a lot of movie freaks in Japan will actually make DVD's like these that haven't gotten an official release over here, again converting them to the correct format for US players and making all the cover art and inserts too, good stuff. Hope this helps!

Oh, also, theres a very good website specialising in this kind of movie that may have resources, its called something like mandiapple.com, try searching on that also.

And - oops, forget this part - I'm still not sure if the two Kurosawas are related. Seems quite the coincidence (or tribute?) though if they're not. I'll definitely look into that, I thought the same thing when I first saw his name.

Thanks UberManc for the movie info. I thought the ring was fine and I hear they are making a sequal. Not to sure if that is a good thing or not.
