This may have been covered before .. but wondering how many have this experience... you know your alone in the house .. or whereever you are at the time... and as plain as dy you hear your name called out ... usually by a familiar voice... and you answer before you catch yourself?
I occaisionally hear my dad call my name or my mother.. both passed away. It is very startling when it happens ... I go looking through the house and of course no one is home. Wonder what causes this?

Eeyup. Many times. All too often at when I'm sleeping.
For me it's just been different spirits who either call to get your attention or are being a pain in the buttox.
I've never had a loved one who passed on call my name.
That's just my personal experience.

It could be your mind playing tricks on you, sometimes the wind or something might sound like a voice. I've had that happen. Of course then it isn't "clear as day" but it can sound like your name.

Or it could be a ghost/spirit trying to get your attention. Maybe you should try EVP; if your ghostie talks to you maybe you can get a recording.

I've had this happen in the past, but not recently. In one of my former homes, a large Victorian house I shared with my parents, this would happen to my father and I frequently. One of us would hear our names distinctly called from downstairs when no one was down there. It didn't seem to matter what time of day or night this would occur, I could never find a pattern.
I had this happen also at the home I recently moved from. Shortly after we bought it, an elderly neighbor that I never got to meet passed away. A few weeks later, I heard a gentle, male voice saying "Well, hello there!" I also experienced a woman, firmly asking, "Where is Janie?" Janie is the name of my biological half-sister. Both incidents happened as I was drifting off to sleep.
I've wondered sometimes if being in a relaxed state like that could leave us a little more "open" to communication with spirits.

Strange it never happens to me when I am dozing or sleeping ...I am wide awake and usually not even thinking about such things ... last time I heard it was after my father passed away and I was still living at home... mom had been put in a nursing home. ... Dad had had his life long business in the basement of our house he was a mechanic. He used to yell through the floor to me if he needed something or help. he would just bellow out my name with a voice that would penetrate concrete. It was about a year after his passing that I heard it. Making me jump outtta my skin I went downstairs and of course no one was there the bay doors were all locked ... I unlocked them and went inside ... looked around ... nothing was out of place ... then I heard a familiar sound upstairs... heavy footsteps coming from dads room to the kitchen and the the back door slamming. I ran back upstairs ... and it was normal. The next day I call a friend to come over and help clean the basement out a bit. We had just left the upstairs and locked the door and went around back to the basement and opened it up ... we were quietly sweeping down the floor and ... and the footsteps and the door slamming happened again ... my friend asked me who was upstairs?
I looked at him ... he had heard it too. I simply replied to him ... just dad. My friends eyes got wide and was suddenly ready to go home.

First off I want to thank Kell fo doing such a life life replica of me and "witchy poo!" Hugs Kell =P
I have experienced my name being called serveral times over the course of my life. Probably the most questionable was as I got in my car and the spirit said,"hello Peggy !" And it was very friendly, this happened around the late 70's.
The biggest idead of this at all, is for most people this is not coming from inside your head, but a seperate entity speaking to you!
So yeah, add me to the list of speaking with spirits, sometimes? From my personal experiecne, it doesn't happen often.
Hugs to all!

I have had that happen to me a couple of times. I can't honestly remember specific situations but I do know that everytime it has happened it was in my parents house. It's funny that you mentioned that Peg, how some people feel like it's in their heads, because when it has happened to me that was the first thing that I thought too. The only thing that led me to believe that it wasn't just in my head was the fact that I was so startled and that I actually turned around to see who was there. [Eek Smile]

It happens to me all the time.. Friends of mine laugh at me because I will jerk my head around to see who was calling for me and nobody is there and they didn't hear anything. The strangest time was when I was home alone and heard my name distinctly called from the backyard. So out I go and lo and behold there's nobody there. I live in teh middle of nowhere and this was before the people closest to us put in their house so I couldn't blame it on the neighbors. Also my entire family calls me Randi and everytime I hear my name called it's always Miranda. I always put it off to my eternal need for attention. [Nerdily Unsure]

Alan, I'm wondering if you haven't got a case of residual engergy going on! If this was something your dad did frequently, it could be that a part of his energy is "etched" in time, repeating a common activity over and over.
I've even heard of cases of residual energy in which the person was still alive. For example, hearing footsteps on the porch when someone is due to be in from work, even though they may be late for some reason or another.

When I used to live at home in CT. Someone
would always call my name. It was when I was
in my room with the radio on, I would hear
someone call me. And I would search out my mom
and ask her what, and she would say, she didnt
call me. [Nutty]
Sometimes at work, I thing I hear someone
say my name, but then again, on party days
there isnt one person that doesnt. But even
when it's quiet and there are a couple of people
there, I do hear my name being called and
say "what?"

Ever since I've lived in SC (one year) I have occasionally woken up and sat bolt upright in bed because I could hear someone female (I think) saying my name right into my ear. I dont think it happened before I got here, and I have no past connection to this house.

I've never had this experience, but it reminds me of something my grandmother told me and my sister when I was thirteen.

When she was a little girl her mother died and sometime afterward she was in a school yard or some place like that and as she was either in or approaching a building a voice called out "Eloise (her name) don't go down there!"

She swore she heard it as plain as day and it was the voice of her mother; perhaps warning her of some danger such as a child molester.

That story was creepy enough to keep me awake. [Eek!]

This used to happen to me A LOT especially when I was a kid and a teen..but has still happened to me as an adult. This would happen just as I was falling asleep, I would hear my name loudly spoken in my ear and it would jar me. Sometimes it was a loud whisper, other times a regular tone. What is even weirder is that later on it would be curse words, which I found particularly unsettling and disturbing. I guess it was such a regular happening that I never considered it to be from an "Otherwordly" source..it was just one of those odd things that I just accepted without questioning it and never thought too much about it.

I haven't exactly experienced this phenomenon but after my father died my mother, my two brothers, my nephews and me would all wake up shortly after 4:30 am. Once I was awakened by a loud knock on my front door. I checked and no one was there. It was only later that I realized that it was my father's knock.

My seventeen year old son is experiencing the someone calling his name thing quite often in his bedroom now. He swears it's me calling him but I'm not. He'll come out and ask "What did you want? I couldn't hear you." and I'll answer "I didn't say anything." ?!

Hi Grumpie,

Yes, these are common manifestations - both the name calling and the knocking (although a little less common).

I once heard 3 loud knocks on my bedroom window as I lay down to sleep for the night. When I got up and looked, there was no one there. And the back yard, where my window faces, has a 6 ft. block fence around it. Kinda takes you by surprise, with a little heart-pounding added in. [Big Grin]

Seems the name calling (and other talk) will go on in phases, around here anyhow. Sometimes it sounds like another member of the family, other times not. It makes me wonder if they aren't somehow able to mimic the sound of our voices to other family members. At any rate, and if at all possible, tell your son he is not alone in this... it happens to a lot of people.

In Hawaii, having your name called from behind your back is a bad omen. I've had my name called but I have not yet answered one that called me from behind. One thing I do notice though, the spirits in Hawaii that call your name tend to mimic those of family members, especially dead ones.

I have had a few occations, while falling asleep, of hearing my name called. Every time it is a soft whisper, and I figured it was my waking sleepstate (I like that one...waking sleepstate.)

The only time I heard my name called was in a library. Funny enough, I was reading a book about ESP and stuff. The book (don't remember the name, it was an how to book.) was discribing how a good way to increase & practice extra auditory perception is to imagine two cones coming from your ears, with the wide mouth of the cone away from your head. well about a minute into this exercise, I hear my name YELLED from about 20 feet to my left. I turned fully exspecting to see someone I knew. All I seen were people reading and looking for books and stuff. It was time to go anyway so I left.

Also, It wasn't the voice in my head. I know that voice; it's mine, and we fight all the time! [Nope!]
