I was thinking earlier today of the 1960's when I was growing up and recalling the horror fad that (among others) took place then.
Does anyone who is old enough to remember recall magazines such as Creepy, Famous Monsters of Filmland and MonsterWorld?
How about those plastic monster models made by Aurora which included The Mummy, Dracula and The Creature?
Let's not forget those sitcoms The Munsters and The Adams Family.
I remember those monster trading cards; gee, how I now wish that I would have kept all that stuff.

The Munsters,The Addams Family,old Abbot & Costello movies,Vincent price.The toys were before my time(born 73).I can relate though.I used to watch alot of old black & white horror flicks.
I was always bummed out that I missed out on Creepshow & Eerie magazine.
Caught alot of Alfred Hitchcock,Twilight Zone,& the Outer limits...My parents pretty much let me watch horror..
I'll never forget seeing Psycho...Brrrr.I heard that shower scene was actually done w/chocolate sauce!

Do you know that Granpa from the Munsters is 93 years old? In People this week, a couple made they're own 1313 Mockingbird Lane. LOL Last year the "real" grandpa came to celebrate!
And just think, tomorrow night we can all act like kids again........he he he he he!

I really loved those Creepy and Eiree magazines with it's stories in comic book format. The later editions in the early 70's were done in color.
One thing I did keep was a comic book rendition of Dracula which was done by an artist named Russ Jones which I purchased in the late 60's for fifty cents. It features an introduction by Christopher Lee.

I wasn't allowed to even touch those magazines. =( . One of my uncles used to have a whole bunch of them but they were off limits whenever I visited.

LOL Remember when penny candy was actually two for a penny and a candy bar for a nickle was HUGE!
You could go to Kmarts with a quarter and get a soda and fries and still have change from a quarter to get some carmel corn on the way home?
My kids do not beleive me sometimes LOL!
But on the flip, my parents house payment on a 3 bedroom all brick ranch was $98 a month? That was alot back then, they tell me.
My allowance was $2 a week, and I could actually have a riot all weekend on that?
This isn't the 60's but after graduating HS I bought my first new car in 1974, a Plymouth Duster, the Twister one for $3,300? LOL Brand spanking new?
My last vehicle cost me $34,000?
Let us turn back time? LOL

Well, I know for sure the candy bars got smaller! I haven't grown hardly since the 6th grade? LOL
I am serious. I used to be the tallest girl in my classes and I just quit growing. Same shoe size, the whole nine yards! And those candy bars are seeming pretty little in my hand!
It seems like the olden days regular candy bars are the jumbo ones now LOL!
The only sad thing is, I look at the world my grandkids are gonna grow up in? Guess we have alot of strange and crazy stories to tell don't we?
And I haven't even gotten to my flowerchild days! LOL

I remember reading magazines like "Tales from the crypt","eiree tales","Tales of the unknown", and loads of others but right now I just cant remember what they was .....
And ahhhh yes Flash Gordon on the TV, I used to run home fast in case I missed any of it and sit on the edge of the settee, thinking wow I want to be Flash Gordon. And that Emporer Ming, if I ever get my hands on him...........ahhhh those were the days.

When you mentioned the models from Aurora, I could just smell the glue!
We had a battle over which was the better show, the Munsters or Addams Family. As far as I was concerned the Addams family was the ideal family, more normal than the Cleavers. I wanted to be part of a family that was so loving with each other you could ignore the weirdness.![[Confused]](confused1.gif)

What does that say about my childhood!I was really young in the 60's (cough cough.) But I remember Dark Shadows (the tv show.) My older sis watched it every afternoon after school, and I sat there watching it along with her. I think that probably started my interest in the paranormal. Yall remember the ghost on that show, "Quentin"? I just thought he was the coolest... It comes on tv now on one of the cable channels in the mornings, so I have caught the first couple of years of it in re-runs. Think it ended around '71 or something. Now when watching it, it's kinda funny, how differently they did things as far as filming and special effects. HAHA, Barnabus in "bat-form" for instance. Looks like one of those black cardboard Halloween bats. Oh yeah, and remember Chatty Cathy dolls? One of the first dolls that you pull the string and it talked. I cut my sister's Chatty Cathy doll's hair, and I pulled the string on mine so much her voice became a rrrooaarrrrr instead of words. I still have mine and she still roars very well.

Oh yeah, Dark Shadows; I really liked that show and still do. Since it came on during the week in the afternoon while I was in school there are still a lot of episodes that I have never seen. The show ran from 1966-71 and had just about every kind of monster as well as some equally despicable humans like Jason Maquire. I recently bought some of the videos that I found at a used bookstore here.
My sister had a Chatty Cathy doll and I had a Herman Munster one that talked by pulling a ring.

I wondered if anyone was going to mention Dark Shadows. Now when I watch that show, I truly cringe. The acting was abysmal. But when I was a kid, I couldn't wait to get home from school to watch it. I'd get so mad when Mom had to go by the store on the way home.
The question is-did we develop our love for the occult because of Barnabas, Questin, et. al. or did we have that spark of interest in the macabre in us and this show just nurtured it until we were old enough to go out and find out more for ourselves?

Saturday nights. We were only permitted to watch some of them. I remember my folks went out one Sat and my older sis was in charge. The three of us sat hip to hip watching the show all spooked out - at the same time that a scene with a woman falling through glass was on, sound of breaking glass came from the other room. The three of us dove into the nearest closet where we stayed till our folks came home. It turned out the glass breaking was some wine bottles that exploded. A result of a failed attempt by my parents at making home-made wine. (no wine kits back then). Next to Thriller the Munsters were also a fav.

Sharing a room with my older brother was an adventure the night he traded a ton of his old comic books for a ton of those "MONSTER" magazines. I couldn't sleep in the same room with them!
Chiller Theater! Do you recall that the hand they showed coming off a commericial break sinking into the mud had 6 fingers?
Does anybody remember Zacherle? Or was that a New York thing?

HI Gene, I think Zacherle was a New York thing. When someone mentioned the Aurora models I immediately smelled glue and enamel paint. The big fight in my family was which was the better show, the Munsters or (the correct answer) the Addams family. Although I did love Grandpa. I cannot beleive Al Lewis is still running around NY on the political scene. He is quite the activist.
