I just got around to seeing Cold Mountain this weekend. The movie was awesome, but pretty unsettling. I usually am not a cryer during movies, but I bawled almost straight through this one. It is definitely worth seeing, but bring tissue -- there were few dry eyes in the theater, men and women.
The movie was incredibly intense, definitely not for kids (very graphic violence and sex). It was an amazing movie; for anyone with ancestors who fought in the American Civil War, you leave with a renewed respect for them.

I saw it to Carrie, like you know I had to loving the civil war so much. I thought it was very good, but I think they could of played up with Ruby teaching ada more and vise a versa. Ruby was the highlight of the movie and I would of like a little more interaction with her and ada. I also felt ada or Nicole kidman doesn't seem to
express to much real emotion. She plays her part well, but I feel there is an emptiness to her. Did you feel that by anychance? I loved the guy he was awesome. That first kiss between them had great chemistry.
take care

I saw Cold Mountain Christmas day (1st day out) and liked it a lot. I think Rene Z will walk off with the Oscar for her portrayal of Ruby. I also enjoyed the movie Gettysburg (surprise, surprise) but think a movie like that really needs to be experienced on the "Big Screen". Gods and Generals was a big let down, which is a shame because it looks like we won't see the third in the trilogy, The Last Full Measure. That was the one I was waiting for because they had been spotlighting Gen. J. L. Chamberlain right along and most likely the last scene would have been the surrender scene at Appomattox Court House. Thought maybe they would ask me to play the Gen. Gordon’s part. [Wink]
Appomattox April 12,1865:

"At the sound of that machine-like snap of arms, General Gordon started, caught in a moment of its significance, and instantly assumed the finest attitude of a soldier. He wheeled his horse, facing me, touching him gently with the spur, so that the animal slightly reared, and, as he wheeled, horse and rider made one motion, the horse's head swung down with a graceful bow, and General Gordon dropped his sword-point to his toe in salutation."

I saw Cold Mountain also. I thought it was fantastic!!! Some scenes were very hard to watch though. But all and all it was a beautiful film. I thought the love story part was done beautifully.

Mary, I know what you mean about Nicole Kidman's "emptiness". However, I think it was probably portrayed due to the restraint and repression women of the middle and upper classes were forced into during that time period. The Ada character was pretty daring to be the daughter of an affluent, educated minister and falling hard for a laborer.
Alan, I'm intrigued by the photos. Where was the pic taken of the thatched roof cabin or barn? You just don't see thatched roofs in the US. Great pics! Hubby is a Civil War buff too!
Jeffrey, that is disappointing about the third movie. I was about to buy Gods and Generals on DVD for James' valentine present, but I may hold off now!
GFQ, I agree. Being a new mommy, I almost had to leave the theater when the scene came on with the baby. I was bawling my eyes out, but I'm really glad I saw this movie.

Hi yes maybe that is so Carrie, Alan the pictures intrigued me. Where did you get them? I wrote a story about a girl who lived in Gettysburg during the war and falling for a confederate soldier. Its still in my old computer I hope, and I did put it to disk. I wanted so much for her to play my main charactor, until I saw this movie. I thought well now she did this she can't do mine. I know its all pipe dreams but I think my story would make a great movie. I kind of saw Mel Gibson for my main guy, but sigh he is getting a bit too old for the part. I guess he doesn't have to be that young. He can still sweep a girl off her feet, sigh.....I wrote this book about 4-5 years ago and have been meaning to go back an edit but then again you have to have some time and that is something I do not have.
I started writing a sequel to it and that never got too far either. I need a few clones.... I keep saying that.
oops i forot this is under Marvin's name well its me Mary and I don't have time to re do it. =)
love yah
