I was just watching a show earlier this evening on the Travel Channel (those people never show travel shows anymore! ARGH!!). The show concerned the inner-workings of Las Vegas casinos, and the steps Nevada has taken to punish those who cheat in the casinos.
What really shocked me, was an interview with a man who received a sentence of life without parole for cheating in Vegas casinos. Now, from what was said, the fellow had made quite a career out of this, but I could'nt help but be shocked at the severity of the sentence for a non-violent crime. How many rapist and murderers were released to make room for someone who cheated at poker??!
Anyone else aware of this? I thought this was absolutely absurd. I know the casinos pull a lot of weight with Nevada state officials, but isn't this a bit much?
The show went on to describe the elaborate security systems at the casinos, and how they easily match people who are cheating, as well as identifying VIP's to kiss up to. Why can't they just identify these fellows and have some system where when they are found guilty of cheating, they could be banned for life from the casinos. It sure would save on tax payer money and provide more room in the prison system for the really "bad guys." Or, does that make too much sense?
