Hello there!
Just a story I would like to share with you.

My mom and I were on Cuba some time ago together with my dance group. Among other things we dance traditional Santería/Yoruba dances, and through this we have some knowledge of the Santería religion. Well anyway, while in Havanna my mother bought a beautifully carved and painted wooden staff. She was in a market when a man came up to her carrying the staff. He said she should buy it, and she did. When we were going home a week or so later our group leader, who is in the Santería, saw the staff. Very surprised she told us that it is a staff that is used in religous ceremonies to summon the spirits of the dead.

Well, we thought, that's interesting! We brought it home, careful not to bang it into the ground (hitting it on the ground three times supposedly summoned the spirits). First we placed it in mom's room, but she found it a bit unpleasant to have it in the room she slept in (it has a large eye near the top, which I find rather creepy). So we took it out to the livingroom, where it has been ever since.

Some two weeks ago I got home after a long night of waking with a couple of friends. Mom had gone to work and wasn't there. I walked through the livingroom, which I'm afraid had been a complete mess since my grandpa died, we just hadn't the strength to tidy up in there for some reason. Something seemed strange as I walked through, I had to turn around and look. The atmosphere of the room was, in lack of a better word, weird. I looked up and saw the staff lying on top of a tall closet. Hm...It hadn't been there before. Weird, I wondered what my mom had been up to while I was out.

When mom came home she told me how her night had been. She had woken up, she doesn't know why, and walked out into the livingroom. The cats (we have two) were sitting in front of the staff, completely still, staring at something. Mom took a closer look at the staff. A large multicloloured beetle was sitting on it. It moved aound a bit and was definately there. Just for information, mom never sleepwalks as I do, she was fully awake.
Not knowing what else to to she took the staff, still with the beetle on it, and put it up on the closet, just in case the cats would try to catch it...
There are no such beetles where I live. Not with those colours (bright green, red and yellow) and of that size. We looked for the beetle afterwards, but couldn't find it. I wonder if it was really there, if it was a physical animal or some sort of spitit. Can't help thinking about the egyptian scarabs.

We have finally tidyed up the livingroom now. It felt like it had turned into a jungle, the plants had grown more during the time we left them alone than they have ever done. It was weird, lots of shoots growing out of seemingly dead branches, long strands stretching down to the floor. It was like the room enjoyed being left alone. We joked around, talking about the jungle in our livingroom that even seemed to have developed a fauna (the beetle)! But now we have it under control again, and still no sign of the beetle, dead or alive. That's too bad, I would like to see it.

Hi Wilhelmina,

What an interesting story thanks for sharing it. The staff sounds quite intriquing. Have you done any further research on it or taken any pictures of it? The man selling it, did he have several to sell or just this one? It's to bad your Mom didn't put the beetle in a jar (with air holes) so you could have a closer look in the morning. She's braver then I as when it comes to bugs being in my home(especially the crawling type) I'm quick to get rid of them before they venture into the nooks and crannies or my pantry lol. Have you tried to find a picture and info of it on the net? It may give you a bit more insight to where it may have come from. Hugs, Cat =)

Hi!
I don't know what to think of your story, but I do have something interesting to report...one of my best friends, back in Texas, is Cuban- his parents are involved...or were involved...with the Santería religion. (I know nothing about it) They have a staff in the..chapel? in their house that sounds just like yours! I have emailed them your story, so hopefully they will get back to me soon with their opinion. I'll keep you posted!
