From what I've been told by people who have served on Okinawa there is a wine that is manufactured there that contains a small amount of opium. Does anyone know more about this?

From what I can gather that is what laudanum is.

laudanum

n : narcotic consisting of a tincture of opium or any preparation in which opium is the main ingredient

It was used heavily in the Victorian era. Apparently opium was commonly mixed with alcohol. It's often mentioned along with absinthe-crazy making stuff. I don't know if it's available in Okinawa or not but it's definately mucho illegal here.

Is it possible that it's tonic water that the person was talking about? Tonic water used to contain quinine (I don't know if it still does or not), quinine isn't related to opium as far as I know but who ever told you about it might have thought that it was. Quinine is used to treat malaria.
