I just had to share this with you guys...this one was so good that it made the hair stand up on my arms and the back of my neck! At the school that I substitute teach at a couple of paras told me about a tape the music teacher had made. She was making a tape of herself playing a Christmas song on the piano. When she went to play it back, an old man's voice starting singing right along with the music in the middle of the song and then faded out before the song was finished! I did get to listen to it and sure enough, there was a voice singing along in the middle! What freaked the music teacher out was the fact that she was absolutley alone in the room and the only microphone that was on was the one right in front of her piano! So there was no way on earth that anyone could have sneaked in and started singing....she would have seen them!! If I knew how to download that kind of stuff I'd post here in a heart beat! We named our friendly, Christmas song-singing friend Clarence...maybe he's hanging out waiting to earn his wings! [Wink]

Sounds like someone thought she needed a lil' bit of a baratone in her song. We have had stuff like that happen to us, except it was recorded we just heard them.
Once when I was younger, me and my sis were upstairs, I was staying the night in her room. It was about midnight when she started telling me about this cool book she was reading. Well, all of a sudden out of no where we heard my deceased grandma yell "Brandi Nicole, Dawn Marie, put the book down and go to bed". Scared us so bad we just looked at each other, my sis closed her book, we looked at the clock (4:35am) and went to sleep. It is funny to talk about it now, but we did just what she told us to, lol.

Sounds like 'Clarence' wanted to add some vocals to the piano playing. =) It would be great to hear the tape. I think there may be a thread with some info on how to download a tape. I'll see if I can find it, unless someone else recalls the one I'm thinking of?

Hi Lizziegirl,

The link below is a thread that has some discussion on getting EVP's on your pc etc. Although Brauvura was asking about her digi recorder there is a comment within the thread by Kevin that may also apply for a tape recorder? There was another thread that had pointers on how to do this with a tape recorder vs digi, but it must have been within a pic post or something as I can't seem to find it. If I recall correctly it is fairly easy to do though. Calling Radio Shack has been suggested before as they have every wire hook-up one needs, maybe give them a call as well.

I hope this helps a little. I'm sure others here that have experience with this will be able to help out further. I find more info out in the meantime I'll let you know. Good luck, can't wait to hear the recording. Cat =)

Hi Lizziegirl:

First of all, you need to get that tape onto your computer and to do that you need to copy it onto a cd or record it onto a digital recorder with usb capability.

Here are several options you can choose from:

1. Play the tape and record it directly onto your puter using a microphone which plugs into the pc. You can try that, but you will defintely lose quality. I wouldn't recommend it.

2. Play the tape and record it onto a digital recorder which has usb. You also need a program, which usually comes with the recorder with usb capability to upload it to your puter. You may lose a little quality doing it that way, but it can be done. (I did this to get an evp off of my voice mail and it worked.)

3. You can use a stand alone cd recorder. They have regular jacks in back, the output of tape deck goes into the input of CD recorder. Then you can make a cd of the tape and put it on your computer that way.

4. There are stereos which have both cassette and cd player/recorders on them. You can copy tape to a cd that way too, and then put it on your computer.

5. Some computer towers are equipped with analog reading capability. (Not sure if yours does or not and I'm not real familiar with that. Someone else may be able to tell you about it.)

After you have it on a cd, you may need a program to extract the file from the cd, unless your burner program has that. Most of them do, so you can save the file from cd to puter. I'm not sure what type cd or dvd drives you have or software on your pc. There is an easy and free program you can download to extract audio files from cd and save them as .wav or MP3 files. It's called cdex and you can get it here: CDEX Free D/L[/URL] Also, sound files like .wav files can be large in size, so you may want to compress them. I use the sound recorder in windows to compress .wav files.

There is another way to get your audio file off of a cd, compressed, and onto your computer. (I prefer my burner or using cdex.) Once you get the recording onto a cd, this may look hard, but it's not:

1. Put the cd in, and open the file into the burner like you're going to copy it.
2. That will also put it in your temp file first.
3. Don't do burn.
4. Go to Programs/Windows/Temp file.
5. You will find the file there.
6. Right click and send it to My Documents.
7. Open your sound recorder. (You go to Start/Programs/Accessories/Sound Recorder)
8. Click on File/Open and open that file from My Documents into the Sound Recorder. You use this to compress the file and save it.
9. Then Choose Save As. At this point a window will open and that's where you convert, compress and save the file. Choose the location on your pc where you want to save it, like in My Documents or My Music or whatever.
10. At the bottom of that window, you will see a button at the bottom that says "change." Click that, and choose from the FORMAT drop down menu: MPEG Layer-3. Below that from the ATTRIBUTE drop down menu, choose: 56 KBit/s 22,050 Hz Stereo.
11. Then on File Name, Give it a name.
12. Click Save and you got it, compressed and saved on your pc as a .wav file that is not too big to post on a webpage or wherever.

Here's some screenshots for you.

Change Button on Sound Recorder Save Window
 -

Choose Format MPEG Layer-3
 -

Choose Attribute 56K 22,050 Stereo
 -

Hope that's not too much info, but there's your options. Like I said, if you have a burner program like Nero, you can extract files from the cd and/or save them using that.

Once you get the audio file onto a cd or your computer, if you need any help with it, let me know. I'd love to hear it. =)

Hugs,
Pate

Hi everybody,
I haven't been here for awail had to get a new computer. My daughter needed my for college.

It is very simple to transfer from record to computer. Go to radio shack and ask for and in-line hook up for commputer and take your tape recorder with you so you can get the right size hook up for recorder sometimes you need an adapter. All it is is a line that plugs into the microphone plug on your computer and the other end plugs into recorder ear plug.
To get it on computer go to all programs than accessories than entertainment then sound recorder. Press record on the computer and turn on recorder to play. listen to it and if you like it save it to your computer.
I tried for 2 years to get my EVPs on the computer read this someway and tryed it. To simple to be true but it works.
Good Luck

Thank you for the info, Starlou. This is what I meant by saying getting the tower to read analog. I haven't had to get a tape to a pc, so I wasn't sure on that. That's really great to know.

Lizzie, when you get the file on there, you still may need to compress it, sound files usually relatively large. If you need to compress, just open it in sound recorder and follow steps 7 thru 12 above. Also, if you want to have it posted to SpiritKeep, you can send it to Kell or you're welcome to send it to my email on my profile without compressing and Kell can post it on it SK for you.

 - Thanks again Starlou and hope you are doing well.

Hugs,
Pate

Wow, this is a lot of great info. I've never tried to get something from a tape onto my computer so most of it is new to me.

I do have a simpler method for accessing a file on a Cd, this way you don't have to worry about intsuctions for different programs.
1. put cd in drive
2. Click on "My Computer"
3. select the cd drive- whichever letter your computer assigns it-mine is CD Drive (E:)
4. click on the file you want- your evp.
5. drag and drop it to where ever you want to put it, probably "my documents".
6. it's now on your computer, you can upload it or edit it from there, just don't forget where you put it.

This post is getting confusing. [Laughing]

You can drop and drag a file to your puter from a cd. Except when:

It is in an MP.3 format, you have to extract the file or "rip it" from the cd. You can't save it by drag and drop in that format. If the cd is set up as a CDA file (Audio CD) has .wav or MP.3 files, you have to "rip it" from the cd, using either your burner program or a program like cdex or using the "Rip" feature in Windows Media Player.

These files are really large files, so if you want to send it to someone through a messenger program, or you want to upload it to a website, you have to compress the file. Easiest way to compress it, (after it is on your computer) is by opening it in sound recorder and compressing and saving it.

Also, if it is a cd you have burned yourself, you can usually use the drag and drop method. Otherwise, you have to rip it.

This wouldn't apply if you uploaded a sound file from a tape directly onto the puter, using the method Starlou suggested. All you would need to do then, is open it in sound recorder and compress it.
----------
If I were Lizzie, I'd use the method Starlou suggests to get it on the puter. Don't worry about getting it on a cd first, and then compress it, and you got it. =) Then you can always burn it onto a cd to keep for yourself.

D'oh! This is complicated, I had thought you could drag and drop any file. [Thud] Yeah, forget puting on a CD first, go with Starlou's suggestion.

Awww Lizzie,

I hope we didn't scare you with all this stuff. [Nutty] Actually, Starlou's suggestion is probably the easiest since it's on tape. It does help to have a puter guru in the family that's for sure. I think we all just wanted to hear it, because it really sounds like it's a cool recording. Good luck with it.
