I've only been summoned once, and I was out of town. At the time, James and I were engaged and he picked up my mail and found the notice. Luckily, he notified them that I was not available and would not be back for several days and they excused me.
James served several times, the last of which was several years ago on a child molestation case. They threw the book at the guy. James said it was difficult to watch the little girl testify, but the process itself was interesting.
He said one thing he really noticed is that often, normally fairly intelligent people have brains that turn to mush during trials like this. One of his fellow jurors, an older gentleman James has known all his life had difficulty believing that the man on trial could have physically assaulted such a small child. One of the female jurors volunteered to show him -- on himself. (This very naive fellow was from a rural area, very church-going and had never been exposed to absolute scum in his sixty some odd years. He had never been around much and literally couldn't fathom an adult doing something like that to a child.) Eventually, the creep was found guilty and received the maximum sentence, which he so richly deserved.
