Hi Everyone, well, it has been a while since I have posted or visited this site. It feels good to be here and to share my mind with you all.
I have a question about mirrors. I was told that mirrors are a sort of Gateway to the other side... Ever since I was a young child, I have been afraid of mirrors. (I know it sounds silly. I have only 3 larger mirrors in my house, one faces the wall, the second is in the kitchen, and the third in my bathroom).
Anyway, a few years ago, I went to Wal-Mart and I bought a long wall mirror. Nothing special, just a plain old mirror. So I get it home and I am getting ready for bed, I sit down on my bed and I kinda catch something out of the corner of my eye, and so I look towards the mirror. What I saw, was myself sitting down, but I was already sitting down.... I tried to reason with myself and find that perfect excuse to what I had seen, but I couldn't explain it, so I took the mirror and left it up stairs. I didn't want to think a mirror from Wal-Mart was haunted(?).
A while after my mirror incident, my brother ended up sleeping over at the house. When I got up that morning, he was up and he was mad. He started accusing me of "doing" things, being a "witch" and all that jazz. I asked him what he was talking about, and he told me all night he could hear things coming from the mirror.(Sounds I guess). He even turned the mirror to face the wall. I know that what ever he heard scared him. He isn't one to admit he was afraid and I could clearly see that he was, and his accusing and anger made it even easier to see. I had not told anyone, about my own mirror incident. As I could not explain it even to myself.

What I would like to know, is if anyone has experienced this, and if you have any ideas to why I did, or what it may have been I would love to hear any ideas, and/or advice. :-)

This has bothered me for a while. I'd like to find some answers, or ideas... Thanks Again in advance!

BTW, I still have that mirror, but it stays faced to wall, and it doesn't bother me when it is! (Thankfully) I also went to a Palm reader, (whom was fantastic btw), when I got the nerve up I asked him why I was afraid of them. He closed his eyes, and he said I knew you were going to ask that, and he said all I will tell you is that someone, or something, put you in a dark room, and the door was closed, and you saw something. I asked him what, but he said that I was not ready, and that I will come to know on my own when I am. (When I think about what he says it makes my hair stand on end). Anyway, thanks again!

Jillybean, I can't explain what happened to you, but I can tell you there is a lot of legends/lore/theories regarding mirrors and the paranormal.

I had an odd experience with a mirror also a few years ago. I was living with my parents in an old home that had some paranormal activity. The upper floor of the house was "mine" and I had decorated it with antique furniture. I had turned one of the bedrooms into a sitting room and had an old sofa with a large, antique mirror hanging over it.

I don't know if it was the furniture I had, or something in the house, but that upper story was charged. The feeling up there was completely different from the rest of the house and a lot of people would comment that the area gave them the creeps. Several friends and family members refused to spend the night up there. That old mirror I had would make an odd popping sound, almost like someone would give it a loud thump with their fingers.

We had several people witness this, but no one could ever figure it out. I've lived in two houses since then and never had a problem with the mirror at all. However, it is no longer in the same room with the sofa. My theory was that the energy in the house, combined with the energy from that particular sofa (dating to the 1850's) and the energy from the mirror (I would say from the 1920's or 30's) resulted in some sort of auditory manifestation.

My advice would be to try moving your mirror to another room. It may be something else in the room that with the combination of the mirror is causing it to make noises. Do you have anything old in that room -- something you may have inherited or picked up at an antique show or flea market? If so, try seperating the objects and see if that puts an end to it.

Hi Carrie! Thanks for the reply. Sorry that I did not type back sooner. I have an odd schedule at work. Anyway, the mirror has been okay for me. When I had the mirror in my previous room, I did have an old metal bed, which I no longer use.(I stopped using the bed because one night I woke up and I was incredibly cold...It was summer time, and there was three of us sleeping in the same room. The other two were uncoverd, but my teeth were chattering...I put three extra blankets on me, and still I was cold, then I feel asleep and when I woke up, I was fine. I never could explain it). It has been silent so far... The house that we are in now, is also very old. We are hearing one particular door slamming, and my husband has heard whispering/talking. I am going to see if I can find out anything more on this house, like how old it is. I never really thought that an "older" object could clash with another. So again, thank you! :-)

On the side, I remember my sister telling me about something that happened to her with a mirror. She was one to get ready in front of the mirror doing her hair everyday. On this particular day she said she remembered laughing in the mirror, and when she looked at herself, it was not her. But an old woman looking at her. Or maybe it was her, but aged. I really don't know, because I was not there. (Wish I had been). Mirrors have always been an odd subject for me.

Jillybean that is a very interesting story, scary even. I believe I would have ditched that mirror a long time ago! What are you going to do with the mirror, now that you can't really use it?

BTW - pay no attention to my quote below. [Laughing]

What an interesting story! I have never had that type of experience with a mirror before. The worst problem I have had with a mirror is with an antique hall mirror my Grandfather had passed on to me. We have had to have this mirror reglassed several times. The reflective backing on this mirror seems to pit and flake off within a year of having it redone. This mirror has moved with us several times through several states so, it isn't the climate as some have suggested to me. It has been reglassed by several different companies so, it isn't that one company uses old or defective glass.

Mirrors are an odd thing. I think that some may see the "true you" and reflect that when you look into it.

Edited because I can't seem to spell this morning.

Green Witch, I have heard the theory about mirrors facing one another creating a portal -- whether this is true or not, I don't know; I'm way too chicken to try it! [Laughing]

My mother also told that as a small child, in her family, it was a tradition to hang a dark cloth over a mirror when someone passed away at home to avoid their spirit being trapped there.

I have an antique dresser in my bedroom with a huge round mirror. My husband occasionally does things in his sleep -- sleepwalking, talking, etc... One night he sat bolt upright in bed, staring at that mirror for at least a minute or so. I asked him what he was looking at, and he said he saw a man. However, I couldn't get any more out of him and unfortunately he couldn't remember the incident that morning and didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about. I've always thought there was a little more to that incident than just talking in his sleep. I believe he did actually see something in that mirror that night.

Hello Everyone! First off Green Witch, if I had seen a spirit come through my mirror, I would have quickly passed on that mirror to someone, or set it in the garbage. I have many reasons to hate mirrors too. I had many dreams where I seen myself in a mirror, then that reflection of myself, would change, and come charging at me. Only too see the other "me" was trapped inside the mirror. That other "me" was so evil looking, and she pounded on that mirror trying so hard to get out... YUK! It is a very vivid dream that has stayed with me. I really hated that dream. I would love to know what I had seen when I was young, but at the same time, I am afraid. As for the mirror in question, I just kept it, and I do use it on occasion. I admit, I feel a little uneasy at times, but I am at a point in my life where I am tired of being afraid. Normally, I would never even consider talking about this kind of stuff in my house, in any form. I am trying to find understanding, I believe that we are given these "gifts" for a reason. Sometimes, it just takes one longer to really open up and discover yourself.

Hi Again. Well, I just wanted to say that I hope that it isn't a "true" image of oneself, because I would be very afraid of myself! Hee hee. I wanted to add, that I feel better knowing that I'm not the only one has had problems with mirrors. :-)
Thanks to you all for sharing!

Hi Jillybean, great story! Very spooky. I've never heard about how you are not supposed to hang a mirror on a door (have had one probably every place I've lived, yikes!) nor the one about the mirror reflecting the mirror, very interesting! It is appropriate that I read this thread because just yesterday I had something strange happening with my bedroom mirror. We moved in Dec. to a newly built house, nothing out of the ordinary to note, thank gosh! I'm very chicken. Anyway, yesterday I was in bed reading before my son woke up and I kept seeing something out of the corner of my eye in our bedroom mirror. I couldn't make out what it was, but it happened about 5-6 times when I stopped looking because I was creeping myself out. I've never had any other experiences with this mirror, we got it about a year ago. In addition, last night I was in the kitchen and felt 'something' touch me, just a light touch, not scary - almost so slight I almost didn't notice it. This has happened a few times over the years and I've never though much about it, because it always felt the same but yesterday it felt diferent, like it was a different 'thing' spirit, etc. that was touching me. Whether this has anything to do with my mirror experience or not I'm not sure. I just thought it was interesting that I saw this post today and my experience (if you could call it that) happened yesterday.

I too am not a big fan of mirrors and have had some odd experiences with them. Jillybean I would have gotten rid of the mirror if the same experiences happened to me. Although I likely would have tried moving it to another room (one where no PN activity has ever been experienced) first (as Carrie suggested) just to be certain it's not something else in the room causing things. Seeing that keeping it faced to the wall has helped it sounds like there is something about the mirror. I understand what you mean by being at the point in life where you are tired of being afraid. For me getting rid of it would not be out of fear but more for protection. If the mirror has attracted a negative energy or two it's possible in my opinion that the negativity will continue to surround that mirror no matter where you placed or how little you use it.

Greenwitch, what I've heard about hanging mirrors on doors is you shouldn't do so if the mirror faces the bed you sleep in. Actually any mirror in a room that faces a bed can cause unrest. We had a large mirror attached to a dresser that faced the bed. We too had times where we saw something in that mirror out of the corner of the eye. I was not sleeping well then either (never more then a cpl hours at a time) but chalked it up to a variety of things. I read PN activity takes place around mirrors but didn't think much of it. When I recieved a book on Feng shui and it also recommended to not have a mirror facing your bed I thought hmm that's twice and two different reasons so I opted to remove the mirror. Well I kid you not I slept for several hours straight the first night alone. We also noted the room had a different feel to it especially when laying in bed.

I've read/heard that two mirrors facing each other create a kind of portal. I just pulled out on of the books I have that I recalled reading this in. It's by Joshua P. Warren - How to Hunt Ghosts (a practical guide). In it he says quote: "you should also note that a lot of spiritual activity takes place around mirrors - particularly in a room where two mirrors are facing each other. This may be because mirrors refect electromagnetic energy. It's possible that, when two mirrors face, they create a highly focused beam of energy. That might enable a ghost to materialize. There's also a more abstract possibility: When two mirrors face each other, they create and infinite image - reflections within reflections. The series of reflections resembles a tunnel composed of light, descending deep within the glass. Since both light and ghosts are essentially electromagnetic energy, facing mirrors might produce a kind of energy portal through which entities can travel" end of quote. I have read this in other PN books as well and have heard renowned psychic Syliva Browne say the same thing.

A couple times in past when I've been looking into a mirror for a brief moment someone else was looking back at me and/or my image seemed to change. Freaked me out a little.

I will never have two mirrors facing each other nor one that faces any of the beds in the house. I don't spend any more time then necessary looking into one while getting dressed, drying the hair etc. I will even cover a mirror in a hotel room if it faces the bed I'm going to sleep in. [Laughing] Mirrors are funny things and to me it makes sense that they can create a portal of sorts and/or attract spiritual energy. Funny isn't it how mirrors have long been used in a PN or magical sense in movies or fiction books and they have even come up in historical accounts of certain notable ppl of past. [Eek!]

Thats a very interesting story Jillybean. It sounds like that was causing PNA in your home. I have also had some PNA around mirrors in the past in places I have lived.I am glad to find out now why that was happening .So I will more aware of what mirrors can do sometimes .
