Just wanted to say 'hi' to everyone, I haven't posted for awhile but I do manage to visit the board at least once a week.

Now for the quick question - is is possible for a brand new/just built house to have spirit activity or be haunted?

My dh and I once had the conversation that if we ever moved into a house that was 'haunted' that we would automatically get out of there regardless of what money was involved, it's just as well because I'd probably faint dead away if I ever saw ghostly activity. I haven't ever to this day, and although I believe in it, it is something that I am not 'open' to seeing so that hopefully I'd never see anything.

My husband, on the other hand, I think, might have the 'touch' or at least his mother does and her mother did. Anyway, when he said that about getting a house, we decided (not just for that reason!) to build a new house so it would be a fresh canvas.

But has anyone heard of a newly built house being occupied by spirits? If so, what was your experience or what story did you hear? I am very interested in hearing anything relating to this since maybe I'm being very naive to think that it doesn't happen in new houses, or at least not very often. Thanks, Madammacabre

Hi Madammacabre!

It's good to see you! I definitely think that an older home, one with more history, would have more of a chance of being haunted then a newer home. Although, I have heard of new homes having activity as well. When that happens, it usually ends up being tied to the land or to a particular person.

I haven't heard of that happening very often though, so I think it's safe to say that you will most likely be ghost free! One thing that you can do to really ensure this (more for your own piece of mind then anything else) is to preform some sort of house blessing upon moving in. Here is a link for you to check out some of the ones we have on the site here.

Good luck with your new home!!! Definitely keep us updated!

Just echoing what Trin said... spirit activity is usually linked to the history of a place. If a location is haunted, it usually means something happened there in the past, usually that someone died there, either violently, or they loved the place and don't want to leave.

If you're building a new house on a new lot that was formerly unoccupied, the chances are good that it won't be haunted. The only exceptions would be, like Trin said, if the land itself has activity, or if you or your belongings carry something along with them.

I wouldn't build a new house "just" to ensure that it's unhaunted. Only a small percentage of existing dwellings are haunted to begin with. Of course, if you have other reasons to build, go for it.

I'm in a similar situation where I'm building a new house. Our old house burned down in January, and we lost our 3 cats in the fire. So, in this case I'm hoping I'll get to experience the spirits of my former furbabies in the new house, which is being built in the same spot as the old house. We're hoping to move in next month if all goes well!

I agree that hauntings are not as common with newer buildings/homes. Doesn't mean that it doesn't happen though as it can and does. Like Trin noted often the haunting of a newer place is linked to the land itself or even a person. Tragic circumstances, as Kevin said, can also cause a spirit to remain earthbound and a building doesn't have to be old for that to happen. Unless there is some history to the land itself there shouldn't been reason for a newly built home to be haunted, so I too don't think you need to worry. I've also heard/read of reported cases of walk throughs or drop-ins (as some call them) which is an earthbound that moves about rather than remaining in one location (a rare occurrence). A homeowner experiences ghostly activity for a very brief time (only one time even) without being able to find any reason or link (land or building) to why it may have happened.

Spirit Activity vs ghost activity is a different story. Spirit activity can happen anywhere at anytime. Loved ones who visit do so no matter where we live. Our spirit guides are also always with us and at times like our loved ones make their presence known. When you first experience spirit activity it can be unsettling and can make you wonder if there is a ghostly presence about. Although some activity can be similar between the two there are some definite differences. We've had spirit activity here at this home and had an earthbound at our former home which is an old house.

Do keep us updated and congratulations on building your new home. =)

Kevin I hope all goes well so your able to move into your new home next month. That would be wonderful if your furbabies gave you signs they are with you there. I believe like our loved ones our beloved pets visit us. Cat =)

I have to agree and disagree with previous posters.
I agree that new house are less likely to be haunted for the reasons stated above.
But I have to disagree with Kevin on the point that only a very small percentage of houses are haunted. I would say that a small percentage of houses experience activity that most people would notice and therefore call haunted. I would also say that better than 70% of the places I have visited have some sort of haunting. For a while every place I went to I met someone. For a while after that I began to think everyplace is haunted. But thankfully I started experiencing places that were 'clean'.
I've found that ghosties range from barely contacting this plane to lots of frightening activitity.

As Cat says. You may be experiencing spirit activity. You're doing something new. They or it may be there just to lend some comfort at what may be a stressful time.

I had a similar experience with my own joint. I had it built from new on a previously bush paddock subdivided block. It was the first day or so that I'd moved in, and the family were around and we were outside digging up the garden to get the joint looking a little better.

Mum suggested I close the front door and no sooner had a turned to climb the verandah steps to do so than it closed of its own accord.

I'm more than certain it was just a coincidental change in air pressure that caused it, but it was an amusing occurance. It led to the house being nicknamed DanChester after myself and the court it is on, in reference to the Winchester Mansion.

It was that or Danittyville, but that's just silly.
