Hello,

I have been watching ghost hunters and saw another special on an investigation that happened in the early 90's. My question is: why do they always search at night? Is there a reason for it or does it make for better tv? I hope this is not a dumb question but I always think about that when I watch.

Not a dumb question at all. I've wondered that myself. Anyone know?

Good question! From what I've read, most paranormal activity occurs from the hours of 10pm-4am. These are the hours that people are typically asleep, in a relaxed state, and possibly more open to paranormal contact. So, doing an investigation during those hours would make sense.

However, I've got to agree with you about the possibility that it does make for better tv. The public associates ghosts with dark and stormy nights rather than broad daylight. [Wink]

There are several reasons really... One is a theory some people have that ghosts emit their own low level light and this is easier seen in the dark as opposed to the daylight.. another is we use Infared cameras which work best when it's dark. It's also normally quieter at night which means it is easier to hear anything unusual that might occur plus it makes EVP work alot easier without all the backround noise to deal with. Don't get me wrong, ghosts don't just limit themselves to nighttime hours, investigations can be done during the daytime and can prove very successful.

Hey Rick! [Wink]

That is a good question Eccman! I have to pretty much agree with what the others have said but wanted to add to that. As far as investigations go with commercial properties, most of the places that I've seen investigated are still open to the public and functioning during the day, which would make it very difficult to investigate at that time.

While, this isn't the only reason to investigate in the evening hours, I'm sure this plays a big roll when investigating certain places.

I have to agree too though, it does set more of a mood to watch an investigation going on at night rather then in broad day light.

Hi Ian

This is a good question, as Miranda commented not dumb at all. =) I too have read that PN activity seems to be more prevelant during the late night hours but as Rick noted ghosts/spirits don't limit themselves to just the night. Good info regarding the low light theory and equipment Rick and Trin good point regarding commercial properties.

I too agree that shows which feature night investigations makes for better tv. It not only sets a better mood but provides the viewer with a better chance of maybe seeing something given the equipment used. =)

I haven't seen the program you're referring to, but I'd think it's because it'd be easier to see something that wasn't there when it's dark because there's much less to distinguish it from. Other than that, yeah, the media isn't shy of playing to an urban stereotype. You want ghosts and stuff, go out in the dark.

They've done a few specials Down Here focusing on the Port Arthur prison in Tasmania and some of those seemed pretty spooky if they weren't definitely real.

Personally, from what I see of most of these shows they do it because it makes for better TV.
Whether it makes sense or not I believe is only secondary to the stage setting that they desire.
From what I see of most of these shows it's not about substance but emotional candy.
