When I was growing up we had this cat who's name was Freddie. One day he went out and never returned.

In later years I believe I've had these dreams where I wake up and it's raining and hear meowing outside the window and realize the cat has returned after having dissapearned years ago.

I wonder what this could have meant if dreams indeed have some meaning.

Yes dreams most certainly do have meanings.

Sometimes we have dreams that are simply a mish mash of images from things that happened during the day or from something we read or watched. We have memory dreams as well of events that have happened in the past or of people we know (including those who have passed on). These may not hold much meaning as they are more of a recall. A lot of the times however our dreams hold meanings and can even provide us answers or solutions to problems. We may also at times have prophetic dreams or visitation dreams (loved ones and/or our beloved pets who have crossed over come to visit us in our dreams). =)

Release dreams are most common, they are at times upsetting or scary as it's our subconscious mind dealing with the feelings our conscious minds bury away. We have to release our stress somehow or we would explode. lol And can't forget about the astral travel as well.

Your dreams had meaning IMO. It may have been your kitties way of letting you know he was ok or it could have been your way of finally dealing with feelings you may have buried away years ago when he disappeared. I'm feeling that with it being years later they were most likely visits, it was indeed Freddies way of letting you know he is ok. =)

I agree with what Cat said.

One other option on what your dream may mean (and this is the one that came forward when I read your post) is that your dream is telling about loss. You are feeling some sort of loss in your life and you are not 'feeling' it. Your subconscious is communicating to you that you really are feeling loss with the imagry of your lost cost and the rain. To me it's telling you that you are need to feel the loss of something. A need to work through the emotions instead of bottling it up inside.
