dont get a "tape" recorder while you can get evp's on them there is too much background noise (meaning the noise from the tape itself) get a digital one you can get one for around $40 but make sure it has an external microphone jack and get an omni directional microphone that will increase your chances of getting a good evp. as far as polaroids go i started out with one but i prefer digital it is sooooo much better and in the long run very inexpensive.

when damien is saying backround noise he is referring to the noise created by the mechanisms of the tape recorder.... a digital recorder doesn't have any mechanical parts so that eliminates that type of noise from your recordings. I'd also recommend making sure that the digital recorder you purchase has a USB connection on it so you can upload your recordings to a PC.. once you have them on a PC you'll be able to run them through audio processing software to amplify the recordings and farther remove any backround noise that is present. We normally use Adobe Audition for our audio processing but there are other, less expensive programs out there that will allow you to do the basic things you need to do =)
