We went to see King Kong today. First I have to say I hate movie theatre's! I figured that most people would have already seen it and that the theatre would be nearly empty. WRONG! Sheesh, the place was packed. We waited for 10 min. in a huge line at the concession stand and it never moved forward. I swear if those concession employee's moved any slower they'd be going backwards. The thing is I never buy snacks at a movie theatre because it's too darn expensive but this time I had a gift certificate and I thought "cool, some munchies would be nice." It probably would have been nice too except waiting in line any longer would have made us miss our movie.

Moving past my lack of junk food, loud kids, cell phones ringing in the middle of the movie, people continuously walking back and forth in front of us, and the brats that kept kicking the back of our chairs I have to say that this was a pretty good movie. I've never been a big fan of the King Kong story but I did like this one. The cast was excellent, I don't have a single criticism of any of them. I especially loved the captain of the ship, I wouldn't mind seeing that actor in other movies. Andy Serkis (Golem) was great as both the cook and Kong. The combination of Serkis's performance and the CGI made Kong very realistic and not at all cheesy. They really captured the relationship between Anne and Kong so well that I found myself dreading the end. I personally like happily ever after movies. [Laughing] But there are splashes of humor throughout the whole movie too keep it from getting too tense. Though the ending remains dramatic and sad, as it always has been, the funny moments and the tender moments between Anne and Kong throughout the last 30 minutes of the movie keep your emotions from actually dropping in the gutter. It's a talented director that can keep your emotions in balance while still enabling you to receive the full impact of the scenes and the story.

The only thing that I didn't care for was the extended battle scenes; humans vs. lot's of stuff and Kong vs. the dinosaurs. I thought they were a little too long. I really don't like watching creepy crawly stuff much either, I could have done without those things entirely. As if a sore butt from sitting for a 3 hour movie wasn't bad enough my legs were sore from being poised to flee during all those adventure/battle scenes. [No]

If you haven't seen it yet it's worth it.

[Laughing] I am with you, not a big fan of theatres. There was a time ppl were more respectful, you could enjoy the movie without enduring continual chatting, ringing cell phones, and parents kept kids from kicking the seats without being asked. It's blatant robbery what they charge at the concession. Don't mind telling at times we smuggle in munchies. In past when all 4 of us went we stopped at wallyworld on the way, snacks for 4 ppl cost the same as it would for just one person buying the same thing at the theatre. Ok this may sound really cheap to some but we've even taken bottled water with us (same brand they serve) but hey at $4 a bottle it adds up quick, especially if you want pop as well or need 2 waters each as we do. As was the case for the lord of the rings movies cause they were so long (as was the wait to get in), 5 of us went to the last one and $40 for drinks alone (water no less) is criminal so this time we rebelled. For only $3.00 we got a dozen of the same large (individual size) bottles of water making a pitstop. So $3 for ten drinks vs $40, I'm in, some may say cheap, I say smart. [Big Grin] It was $92 for the 4 us (no smuggling) for LoR 2 vs $45 for 5 of us (smuggling involved) for LoR 3.

Glad to hear you liked the movie Renee. I'd like to see it, it sounds really good except for the creepy crawly stuff. [Laughing] I heard the cast was awesome in this. My son and his g/f went, they said it was excellent, great effects. He said he'd go again, but will wait for it to hit the cheap theatres or video. You can catch a flick for $2.50 M-T-W-Th and Sun, $3 Fri-Sat nights and $1.50 for a matinee at the cheap theatre. You have to wait till the main theatres stop showing a movie to see it there but at least if you can't afford $9 a ticket for the main theatres you can still catch a movie like King Kong on the big screen. You would expect them to be grungy theatres but they're not, they're clean, have comfy seats, nice potties and concession prices are half decent, no smuggling required. [Wink]

Cat, the cool thing about backpack purses is that you can pack any number of things in them. [Laughing] I always bring bottled water with me when I go to the movies, so I don't think your cheap at all. I get 28 bottles for $4-$5 and the movie theatre wants to charge 3 bucks a bottle. NOT! We used to have the cheap theatre's here too but they all went out of business. I guess with everybody either waiting until the DVD comes out or wanting to see the movies in stadium seeting with surround sound they just couldn't compete with the big companies. It was nice though to just pay a couple of dollars to see a movie on the big screen.
