Anyone watching the Olympic Games?
I've always enjoyed the Olympics, both the winter and summer games. It has an energy and excitement that no other sporting event has. To see so many countries from around the world put aside whatever differences they may have, and join together to support and celebrate the athletes, gives us a wee glimpse of what world peace could be. At least it does for me.
For the most part the athletes are not individuals with million dollar contracts, they are men and women from all walks of life who have worked remarkably hard to reach their personal best, to have dreams come true. Not that pro athletes have not worked hard to become pros, it's just their sport is their jobs/careers, unlike the majority of athletes who compete in the games.
Though watching events like the stanley cup, super bowl, grey cup, world series etc can be exciting, they still do not exude the extreme joy, pride and excitement that is so evident throughout the Olympic Games. Even though many will not stand on the podium, they beam with the same pride and sense of accomplishment knowing they have done their personal best. You also feel the disappointment of those who just missed the podium after giving it their all, and the pain felt by some who were unable to perform at thier personal best or injury takes them out of the competition. Games which take 2 to 3 hours to play do not hold the same energy and intensity of watching races which are over in only minute(s) or less. To imagine that a fraction of a second can be the difference in whether you qualify for the finals or not, or if you will stand on the podium offers highs and lows umatched by pro sports. IMO
Congratulations to all the athletes competing in the Games in Turino, and Good Luck to all still competing! An extra big Congratulations to all the medal winners, your perfomances have been extraordinary!! And I would be amiss if I didn't tell our Canadian athletes: We are alll so proud, you have been oustanding, keep it up team!!!
So does anyone have a favorite event that they like to watch? I honestly don't think I can pick just one or two as I pretty much enjoy them all. But speed skating, downhill skiing events (all the of them), curling, skeleton and hockey would be at the top. =)
