This is the little baby Hummingbird that I mentioned in the Spring Fever thread. A friend loaned me her camera so that I could take better pics of him. He co-operated beautifully! I don't expect that he'll stay there too much longer because he's flying really well now and his mom isn't hanging around much, just gives him a little feed now and again and then zooms off. You can't tell his size in these pics but, head to tail I'd say he was about an inch and a half long. He's really grown since he first showed up Saturday, he must be half again as big.

He let me get really close here[/URL].

I've enjoyed watching this little guy so much. Hummingbirds are so beautiful and to have a baby hummingbird hang out in our backyard is really special.

Aww he is sooo cute. I love hummingbirds too. They are so precious and magical. Cool that he let you get up close to him like that, still too young to be afraid maybe. I just want to snuggle him up, he can ride around in my shirt pocket. [Big Grin]

We haven't had when in our backyard for awhile, but my folks have them every summer, but then they have hummingbird feeder hanging near their patio. =) I was thinking of putting one up too, but we do take the kitties out with us in the summer to let them play for awhile in the backyard and I fear they may chase them away. Last summer we had a little baby squirrel (will post a pic if I can find it), he was so cute and not at all afraid to come up to the deck. Until one day, one of the boys got ahold of him, I did grab him in time but he scared the poor thing something awful. Not sure if he just shocked him or actually hurt him a bit as when he went up the tree he just kinda laid there. He was close enough for me to get a pic, and didn't scoot further up when I came near. So I fear he may have been a little bruised. =( Later that day I went out back to check on him and he was gone, he never came back into the yard again. Hub saw him and his Mom near our bush on the otherside of the fence so at least I know he was ok. =)

I hope your hummingbird decides to stick around for a long while. Do you have a feeder? He/she may opt to make your yard a permanent home.

That is just too cool! I love hummingbirds also. I've got to put a feeder up. My mother always kept one up and she loved watching her little hummingbirds.

I don't know that I've ever seen one that tiny!

I was sooo excited to get these pictures! I couldn't believe that he let me get that close to him. The one where he was sitting on the fence I was about a foot away from him. Cat, your right; hummingbirds are magical, I've always thought so. I would love to see a pic of your baby squirrel. He flew off a few hours after I took those pics, there was a big rain storm coming so I suppose he went back closer to his nest. I haven't seen him since but I'll be watching out for him.

I think I might have to get a feeder. I wouldn't be able to put it in the backyard because the sun is way too hot in the summer and it would spoil, but I might be able to put one in front of my living room window. Carrie, isn't it amazing how such tiny little creatures can brighten up your life?
