The Marathon Haunting!
My buddy Billy a DJ at the KCHE Radio Station here in Cherokee, Ia., and my brother Gerald from Lansing, Ks. rode with me on Saturday 4/22/06 to investigate the haunting of a historical house located in the small community of Marathon, Ia..
In it's hey day Marathon had 8 trains coming and going through it's Depot. It was quite the hub of activity in those days, now long since past. It's depot no longer stands, and the community is a deminished relic of it's glory days.
The house in question sits along one of the prominent streets in the town. From the outside it looks like a nice small 2 story house in fairly good repair.
Inside the house it's in a state of deconstruction. As the current owner is presently gutting the house to facilitate for the possibility of improvements. The possibility of those comtinued improvements hinged on our Investigation into whether or not the house was actually Haunted. And then to what state of activity the Haunting was taking.
( I planned this overnight adventure to take place, on April 22nd, so that a portion of the Ghost Hunt would actually occur on my birthday April 23rd. I thought that would be a fun way to spend part of my birthday. As it turned out it was the high light of my birthday, as my Mom forgot the 23rd was my B-Day! lol! ). Woo-hoo! Thanks, Mom!
................................................................
We arrived at the house at approx. 6:45 pm.. Waiting in front of the house was a "Newbie, to Ghost Hunting" Missie from Surtherland, Ia. with her Camper/Trailer that we were going to use for a safe house, as well as providing us a bathroom., because the house had no plumbing service. Nor electricity, other than the 4 drop cords and lights the Family strung up for us, to illuminate the key areas of the small 2 story home.
Along with Missie, were 2 Ghost Hunters from North Central Iowa, from Rowan, Ia. Tammy, and Sue. Tammy is a veteran Ghost Hunter, and has her own Ghost Hunting group known as "NIGHTPRO" in Rowan. Here's the link to her website: magickfires.proboards43.com/index.cgi ( I contribute to her website under the username of, "Table Tipper" ).
Sue is another "Newbie", too! This would be Sue's first overnight Ghost Hunt, in fact it was probably the first such organized overniught Investigation that any of us had been on, outside of those of us who have lived or live in Haunted Houses.
After introductions I encouraged everyone to say a "Blessing / Prayer" for protection during our Investigation. After that I told the group I wanted to enter the house on my own first, to say a special Blessing of Protection for our group, and to ask the Spirits if any, to cooperate with our Investigation. When I came out of the house I spied the family's pet cat named "Catapillar" she is an orange striped cat. I had met Cataplliar before on a previous meeting with the family. Everyone was still milling around out by the Trailer as, it was set up in the parking along the street. So I sat down on the floor of the front porch with my legs dangling to the ground, to pet Catapillar. She was a very friendly cat, and immediately set upon marking me with her scent glands rubbing her face up against my hands. ( Claiming me as her possession! ) I felt honored, so I leaned down toward her and asked Catapillar if she was going to protect our group during this Investigation? It was kind of inside joke between me and Catapillar. She purred with enthusiasm!
I stood up and encouraged everyone to gather up their gear so we could go into the house and get started checking out the house.
We entered the house, those with EMF Detectors scanned the house for any spikes in the electro-magnetic field, no spikes of energy were found. Tammy went to the basement to set up her motion sensor. ( I had determined that the basement was too unsafe for anyone to stay down there. So we set up the motion sensor to detect any motion, or heat variances, which would then sound off with an alarm if anything happened down there. Nothing ever triggered the sensor all night. ) After our cameras were put into place, everyone had a chance to explore the house.
Next Billy and Missie began touring the house and encountering spirits while channeling the some. Allowing the rest of us to observe through their actions the nature of the spirits being encountered.
As you enter the house you walk directly into a small living room. To the left of the living room is an adjacent room that had been formerly used as a bedroom by the Family's daughter. The daughter had reported always feeling sad, and depressed when in that room. And previously related having encountered a Ghost one night as a child. One night several years ago, while the daughter was in bed she encountered a small Ghost which chased her pet cat into the room, and cornering it in there. A week later the cat died from a seizure disorder that appeared to have occurred as a result of the encounter with the Ghost.
While in this room Billy channelled the Spirit of an 11 yr. old girl, who had died from pneumonia, and may possibly have suffered from Polio as well. The girl Ghost was fearful of Billy and what his intentions were, and what he was expecting her to do. She indicated to Billy that her Parents had told her she wasn't to leave the house. And that's the reason she was still there; because she was waiting for her Parents to return. Billy encouraged this ghost to cross over. Billy and Missie both confirmed that the energy level seemed to lessen in that room. However there were no EMF readings to validate that conclusion.
Traveling through a small hallway from that bedroom to the back of the house, Billy and Missie said they encountered a Vortex that acted as a doorway to allow several spirits to come and go through this house. Many negative Spirits seemd to be making this house their home.
One such spirit was a man named Olaf, a former owner of the house, and a hard working farmer. In the abstract for the property and through the use of a Community History Book, knowledge was obtained indicating that in the back portion of property a barn had stood at one time. Possibly part of a farm that Olaf farmed. Billy channeled Olaf's spirit and he proved to be an angry individual. A man who worked hard all day on the farm, and expected his supper to be on the table when his day was done.
Missie seemd to be channeling Olaf's wife's spirit, her name was Sarah. Missie reports having rather unwillingly channeled Sarah's spirit, experiencing everything Sarah was experiencing during her life.
Missie said she experienced the feeling of having been hit in face on the left hand side of her mouth and nose. Missie said she herself, had not actually been struck, but she was feelling the residule stingy pain as if Sarah had been struck by Olaf. Who was angry that Sarah had not had supper on the table for him. Missie said Sarah tried to explain to Olaf that she had, had a problematic day which prevented her from having supper on the table. But Olaf wouldn't hear any of her reasons / excuses.
The before mentioned barn, was the site of a tragic fire when 4 youngsters were playing with matches and had set the barn on fire. 2 of the youngsters escaped while, the other 2 perished in the fire. It is unknown for sure, but suspected that some of the haunting maybe due to the barn fire.
Billy also said he had channelled the spirit of a 17 yr. old girl by the name of Lisa, who had hung herself in an upstairs bedroom. The spirit warned Billy it was not safe to enter that room, as the floor was weak, and likely to fall if he would enter it.
This particular room was completely gutted of all it's plaster from the walls and ceiling. looking up to the exposed rafters you can see that the house had suffered a chimney fire that had charred the rafter timbers. These supports were poorly re-enforced with 2x4's for bracing nailed onto to the rafters that were nearly30 - 40% charred in the fire. ( Imagining how much water had to be pumped into the house to kill the chimney fire, and witnesing the damage left behind, it's easy to come to the conclusion that all that water, "water logged" the house and it's wooden structure. Noting that the living room, and the daughter's first floor bedroom each have suppended ceilings. Probably due to the original ceilings being ruined by all the water poured into the house during the chimney fire. Also the floor in the daughter's bedroom was very spongey when you walked on it. )
After Billy and Missie channeled the spirits in the house, we attempted to perform several "Table Tipping" Seances. ( click on this site for an explanation of how "Table Tipping Seances" are conducted: p095.ezboard.com/freneesg...=362.topic ).
In the living room we encountered a very negative Spirit that refused to cooperate with our Table Tipping atrempts. Possibly this spirit was a very young spirit as it would only answer all questions in the negative, No, No, No...
In the down stairs bedroom we encounterd a very active spirit that showed it's dislike for Billy by trying to attack him with the table. The table would lunge at Billy and kept bumping into him with a violent push. Billy had to fend off the table pushing it away from him. For Missie she was being overwhelmed with the activity of the Table as it fiercefully pushed her backward into the settee that she was sitting in. That was the most active the Table was that night. In the remainder of the rooms the Table would rise but when asked a question it would fall aburptly to the floor and not rise again.
At about 1 am we decided to go on silent running. Gerald crashed on the couch in the trailer, & Missie went to bed in the trailer's bedroom. They were the lucky ones with better sleeping accomodations. Tammy and Sue shared a mattress on the floor of the living room. Billy sacked out on the settee, and I got stuck with a box springs with an foam matt to sleep on. I slept fitfully all night in 1/2 hr intervals. I was never able to keep my blanket on me, something always seemed to block the blanket from covering my back, as well as my feet and ankles. In the morning Sue, and Tammy revealed they had similar problems with their blankets.
About 4:00 am Billy and I got up and went out side. While we were outside the girls began to hear things landing on the floor at the head of their mattress. First a Penny hit the floor. Then Billy entered the house and went to the adjacent room to lay down on the settee, again the gilrs heard something land next to the mattress. It was a dime. Then I entered the house about 4:30 am, and stood just in front of the shut front door, when I too heard a metalic "Tink" noise near the girls' mattress. Sounding like something metal had struck the leg of a metal folding chair sitting next to the mattress. We shined the flashlight down, and found a quarter on the floor.
I borrowed the girls' flashlight and checked the room Billy and I had slept in. In the doorway was another quarter. We had found a total of 61 cents in change.
Nothing much else happened in the house that night. Exhausted from the poor sleeping conditions, we wiled away the remaining time just chatting. At approx. 6:00 am the group reassembled in the house for group discussion on what we had experienced during this Investigation. Gerald operated the Family's Video camera to record our statements as we discussed the night's activities. Even as the discussion was being recorded, several of us felt cold spots arising in the midst of us.
I then met with the Family, giving them their video camera, the abstract to the property, and the community history book. I verbally summerized to the family the events that occurred to us. The Family shared afirmative nods of their heads, as each accounting was told to them about the events we experienced through the night.
I just talked this morning ( one week after the Ghost Hunt ), with a relative of the Marathon Family. News is that, other members of the community have been coming forth and approaching the Family. Informing them that their homes, and or businesses may be haunted as well.
That's rather exciting as we were warned by the Family that discussion of such things like hauntings was considered Taboo, in the community. Now people appear to be relieved to find people that are willing to discuss nonjudgementally with them, their deepest fears that their homes maybe haunted!
