I agree that a meditative state will help. Here is how I contact my animal guides ...
At a time when you are feeling relaxed and receptive, find a quiet, safe place. Lay down or sit, whichever is more comfortable for you. Close your eyes. Feel your body, and allow yourself to move anything that is not comfortable. Pay attention to your breath. Let cool, clean air drift into you, and let everything that isn't needed for your experience, to drift out. Continue relaxing until you feel comfortable and relaxed. Then, with an open heart, invite a guide/spirit/angel to come to you. Be open to whatever the experience is. It might be a feeling, a sound, a sight, a being with whom you can have a conversation. You might start by asking them if they have something to teach you.
Show them respect, and if anything confuses you or frightens you, ask them to help you.
Good luck to you. When I first started my animal work I went to a person who was a guide to this sort of experience. In her case, she used it in therapeutic settings, and I went to small groups where we practiced this sort of thing for years. My animal guides are still with me, and have been essential to my growth, healing, and strength.
