Did anyone happen to catch the show, "Spooked: Waverly Hills" on the SciFi channel? It was pretty interesting and they had some amazing photos, some appearing to be of full bodied apparitions.

I know we had a thread some time ago about Waverly Hills and some debate on whether or not it was mostly urban legend are truly haunted. After seeing some of the pics and hearing the evp's from the place, I'm more in favor of the latter. I know the place was also featured on Ghost Hunters and if my memory is correct, they had some good evidence from the place too.

I'm curious to see what anyone else thought about it. Also, it appears the owners seem to be courting this kind of publicity. Does anyone know if they have any plans for the place or was it bought because of its reputation to generate publicity/television and movie deals?

Hi Carrie,

I seen it on both shows and the owners actually seemed upset that Waverly wasn't more "definitely haunted." What I mean is they think, they have some unexplainable stuff but? Yeah, they want to make it a cash cow! LOL
And I don't remember, if they were even asked, how they came to own Waverly? Do you remember anything on that? My age is really playing with my memory anymore! LOL
In my opinion they are courting public opinion "come see for yourself?"
Got to tell you, I live down the road from the Mansfield Reformatory and they make a fortune during their open season. I can say though that the volunteers that run it are a non-profit and part goes to the upkeep of the old prison and alot to charities in the area.
I am sure there are tons of people who would travel there for the experience. Looked like the place needed alot of work though?
I know that they would have to bring it basically up to code to enterain the public, at least I think? My sons and I belonged to a non-profit when we lived in Michigan. We volunteered yearly at the Haunted House at Eloise in Wayne, Michigan. We had to work almost all year long just repairing, cleaning, inspectors, etc. just to open for 6 weeks around Halloween. Eloise was another sanitarium, TB in its time, then a hospital, its been about everything. Torn down now but a couple buildings are still there. A very heavy place. Good stories about it online, check it out!
Ok I am done rambling, sorry! Yep, think you hit the nail on the head......more books, movies? Although, do they own the story because they own the building? hhhhhhmmmmm? Like do they have rights to the name? Don't know?
Hugs,
Peggy

Carrie, I missed that episode, and it sounds like an interesting one! I always miss the good stuff!! It does sound like there may be more at Waverly Hills than I thought in the beginning. Guess this is ont to keep our eyes and ears open for more information!

Peg, have you ever actually been to see the Mansfield Reformatory? I was wondering what kind of gut feeling you might have had about it. It is good that they are using the earnings to do good things in the area. That is terrific! That haunted hospital, etc., at Eloise sounds like a very interesting place, and it is kind of sad that it has been torn down! I hate to see old places like this torn down, but that is the curse of "progress". Out with the old, and in with the new! Bah!!!

We had an old church-run hospital and home for girls here in Phoenix called "Good Shepard Home for Wayward Girls". This is where the pregnant girls were sent, and I believe it also served as a bit of a correctional institution for some of the girls on the wrong path or without a home. It is now a shopping center, and some of the old buildings were incorporated into the new. Much of the old chapel still remains, and the architecture is reminiscent of the old buildings. I have often wondered if it might be a good place to catch some photos or EVP's. We will have to try it. It is only about 3 miles from us.

Hugs,

Mare

Peg, I was wondering about the same thing in regard to how the present owners came by the property. It does appear they are courting publicity about the place. Still, the photos the investigation group took were phenomenal. It looks like the place is haunted, but it appears to be a lot of hype and PR to go along with it.

It does look like the place would need a tremendous amount of work. It is a huge facility and I couldn't help but think structurally it would be ideal as a resort type thing; however, given the history I'm not sure people would want to stay there -- at least most people.

Bummer we don't get Sci-Fi channel here. [Sigh] We do have space network which has a lot of the same shows on it but not all, so nope didn't see this one. Will keep my eyes on the guide in case this program is aired again and maybe space will pick it up too (or another network), it sounds really interesting.

I saw the Waverly Hills one. One thing I was impressed by were the "shadow people" which showed up in some of the photos. Also, the ghost of the lil girl. I would tend to lean towards the place being haunted, due to the history and the amount of death surrounding the place. I am sure there is hype which has been generated around it too, so it would be hard to say what is real and what is not. I still tend to believe there is a ghostie or two still meandering around there though.

Those were the pics that impressed me the most also, Pate. They had some pretty cool evp's as well. If you saw the Ghost Hunters episode, they caught a shadow person running across a hallway; very similar to what was shown on this show. I've got to admit, I'm curious about the place now! I hope the SciFi channel does more shows like this.

Hi Carrie, it's me again.
I saw it, actually, I was in it. And you are all correct.
I have no doubt that the place is "haunted" but there have been a lot of exaggerations over the years as well.
I have done a lot of research and have disproved several of the legends. Or at least portions of the legends therefore showing doubt to the likelihood of the rest.

TS (Keith Age?), do you know when/if it will be re-airing?

No, I'm not affiliated with LGHS.
In fact, I can't even get them to return my
e-mails anymore...lol
I used to want to get together with them to swap data about Waverly, but I doubt they have anything I need at this point anyway.

Spooked is now available on DVD from what I'm seeing so it may not have anymore scheduled airing dates.
It may play again as a rerun around Oct. or with a rerun of TAPS.

BTW, I'm John, the historian in the grey T-shirt.

Hi Truthseeker! I actually thought about our thread from way back when I was watching the show. I remember I was really impressed with the amount of research you had done on the facility.

Good to know this is on DVD for anyone who may have missed it. The photos from the place would make it worthwhile renting for anyone interested in the paranormal. I have a feeling SciFi will run it again around Halloween. Good to hear from you!

Thank you, I really have the utmost respect for the building and its history. Not to mention the heroes who worked in its halls. They risked their lives to save other’s, some even caught TB and died while working to save people who, in most cases, they didn't even know.
That is the ultimate sacrifice. And they deserve to be respected as such.

Anyway, if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me. I don't claim to know everything, but I have studied a lot. And I'm always willing to share my findings.

And I have more info on how to order the DVD if I could get permission to put it in here.
