When I was a child of nearly 5, my father had a friend come to our property (in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa) to perform dowsing to seek a good place for a well, since we would need one on our 3 acre parcel before we could build and live there. This man used the forked branch of a willow tree, (freshly cut from someplace near the Des Moines River). He would put a bit of a twist on the fork which he held in both hands. When he walked over a good place for water, the branch turned downward very visably!! In the three acres, he found one place near the center of the property, and another along out fenceline at the front, by the road. Both gave strong reactions, but the one in the center looked best.
Since the strongest reaction was in the center area of the property, that is where the well was placed. My father struck water at just 40 feet below the surface!!
The greatest thing about this well is that it never went dry. Our neighbors around the area would have their wells go dry on Mondays (wash day for folks of that era! LOL) We allowed them to come and haul water from our well to help them get by until their own wells were working again. It was quite a sight... seeing them bringing their 55 gallon drums over to fill them at our well!
But, ever since then, I have never forgotten how well the dowsing worked while I watched, and my father told that story many times over the years. He could never believe how this fellow was so accurate in pinpointing the right place for our well.
I have never tried the dowsing rods myself, but I would like to try it some day! My husband got a metal detector for Christmas, and he has to get busy and learn to use it!!! I think it wil be fun!
