Shannon & Paul Investigate The Mayan Ruins: Showtimes Penn & Teller
By Paul Dale Roberts, HPI General Manager/Ghostwriter/Paranormal Investigator
October 27th to October 31st of 2008 was a fun, but exhausting experience. Penn & Teller: Bulls$%t! Showtime TV show contacted me after reading my article on the Mayan Prophesy of 2012. The producers of the show asked me a few questions regarding the prophesy and said I could bring one more investigator with me. That investigator would be Shannon McCabe President of HPI (Haunted and Paranormal Investigations International)

I wont get into too many details of this adventure, because it was well-documented by Showtime. They must have completed 16 hours of footage that will be edited into a half-hour show.
Let me give you some bullet points, before I get into my story. Below are bullets to show how we traveled, where we stayed and the places we visited. The experienced Showtime crew have been involved with many movie and TV productions, I mention a few of their productions in my bullets. The last fourth bullet is called Cosmic Chessboard of Coincidences, you will see why. Now lets get to those bullets, before I get into my story.
Bullet One: How we traveled/Where we stayed:
Shannons husband Bruce driving my car, drives Shannon and I to the Sacramento International Airport. Southwest Airlines flies us to Los Angeles, we stayed at the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles - 6101 W. Century Blvd, and had dinner at the Sheraton with Showtime production employee Aaron Yampolski. Next day, we shuttle to Los Angeles Airport from the hotel and hop on board Alaska Air from Los Angeles to Cancun. From Cancun, Showtime crew in van picks us up and takes us to Chichen-Itza. Shan & I stay at Hotel Mayaland and Bungalows www.mayalande.com/mayaland.html[/URL] When filming ends in Chichen-Itza, Showtime via van drives us to Ek Balam to investigate Mayan pyramids there. When Ek Balam investigation ends Showtime van takes us to Cancun, where we stay at The Westin Resort & Spa, Room 1550. From The Westin, we take taxi to Cancun Airport and fly into Mexico City on Mexicana Air. Mexicana Air takes Shan & I from Mexico City to Los Angeles. Southwest takes us from Los Angeles to Sacramento, arriving Oct 31st. Bruce driving my car is waiting for us at Sacramento International Airport and drives us back to Shans house.
Bullet Two: Places visited:
Chichen-Itza, Ek Balam, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Cancun. Note: Previously to this, the only places in Mexico I ever visited were Nogales, Tijuana and Ensenada.
Bullet Three: Some of the Showtime crew has been involved in the following productions:
Mel Gibsons Apocalypto
Fox TVs Cops
The Cave
MTVs Viva La Bam
Bullet Four: The Cosmic Chess Board of Coincidences/Denver policeman Kurt Peterson (a person we interviewed) appeared on eight episodes of Cops and Dave Babb (Showtime Camera Man) was one of the videographers for 10 episodes of Cops. Rob (Boom/Sound) worked with one of our own videographers Leatherface of Off-the-Hook-TV. Rob and Leatherface worked together on MTVs Viva La Bam series.
As this adventure got underway, Shan and I turned up the song: Glamorous by Fergie. We didnt know what to expect. Some minor misfortune occurred when I reached my hotel in Los Angeles only to discover my laptop was missing from my carry-on bag. Come to find out my laptop was waiting for me at the Sacramento Sheriff's Airport Lost and Found when I arrived back in Sacramento. I was lucky, this Toshiba laptop cost over a thousand bucks! Whew!
When we reached Cancun, we interviewed many people (tourists, locals and a Mayan Princess) about the Mayan Prophesy of 2012. Most people believe that there will definitely be some kind of change taking place in 2012. On our own we interviewed an airline stewardess named Renee Peel from Texas, not about 2012, but about her alien abduction experience in which she was floated into a UFO and experimented on. This will be seen in our own HPI production DVD that will be called: Behind the Scenes of Showtimes Penn & Teller: Bulls@#t!: Bulls@#t! Also, in Cancun, when we were heading home, we met Jose Dias, he was walking his horse along the beach of Cancun. Shannon asked him why his horse had a huge wound on his neck. He claimed it was a Chupacabra that did it. One night he heard the animals in his farm screaming and found 6 dead chickens in the pen, as he continued to investigate a Chupacabra was seen next to his horse. He shot at the Chupacabra and it scurried into the bushes and vanished. Jose would not be on camera for this interview. He claimed the Chupacabra looked like a huge wolf with leathery skin, not like the scaly variety that has been seen in Puerto Rico.
While sitting in the bar at Chichen-Itza we met Denver bomb squad policeman Kurt Peterson and his lovely wife who were also interviewed on their thoughts of 2012. They too, believe something dire could happen on December 21, 2012. Melody A. DelPriore & Tim West we met on the grounds of the Chichen-Itza pyramids and Melody was too happy to discuss in length about her thoughts on 2012, which will actually be part of Showtimes 2012 segment.
The most enjoyable part of the investigation process are the interviews. You meet so many interesting people in the paranormal realm. During this interview process we even interviewed a Mayan princess.
During out down time, the Showtime crew, Shan and I, enjoyed a laser light show of the Chichen-Itza pyramids. During the lightshow they explained the history of the Mayans, the Mayan calendar, the architecture of the pyramids, the fascination Mayans had with astronomy and mathematics. It was an incredible show. The next day in Chichen-Itza Shan and I, enjoyed an incredible buffet with assorted delicacies, while being entertained by Mayan singers/musicians that were able to balance full trays of bottles on their head.
In 1997, Mexico City had a huge UFO flap that was witnessed by thousands of people. Many believe that the UFO flap is somehow connected to the 2012 mythos. UFOs are known to frequent ancient sites, so late at night using flashlight, laser lights, binoculars we attempted to signal UFOs in the night sky, hoping for an intelligent signal back. 3 signals to the sky, hoping for 3 signals back. No results. During this investigation, it is important to carry a whistle, in case of an emergency and someone gets hurt, while stumbling around in the dark. Fortunately, no one was hurt during this outing.
The most strenuous investigation was completed in Ek Balam. Using dowsing rods, the dowsing rods lead us to a former Mayan living quarters and burial chamber. The dowsing rods lead us to the same place 8 times. A séance was conducted in which Shannon tried to communicate with any entities speaking in Spanish and the Mayan language. Shannon learned a bit of the Mayan language from the Mayan princess. We had our digital audio recorders rolling and Shan was equipped with her Listen-Up Sound Enhancer. Two possible EVPs from this séance session was heard in real time via the sound enhancer and recorded on digital recorders. When Shannon asked a question with the last words being said was twenty-twelve, another womans voice could be heard lightly in the background saying twenty-twelve. The other EVP sounded like possible Mayan chanting. Further analysis is warranted. Youre probably saying to yourself
how was this strenuous? Easy, I had to personally count various steps at various pyramids at Ek Balam and see if the number of steps coordinated mathematically to the Mayan calendar. Since this was on film, there were many takes in which I would have to go back up several times to re-count the steps. Each time I reached the top or the bottom, I would contact Base 1 (Shannon McCabe sitting comfortably under some shade tree), I was pouring down sweat and felt like a Mack truck ran me over 5 times over.
Shan and I, took a lot of video footage and digital photographs. These are all pending analysis. But, we did notice we had a lot of orb activity photographs on our Chichen-Itza hotel room photographs. Of course our hotel sits on Mayan land, which resonates with the history of wars, torture and slayings galore. It would make sense that our hotel room could possibly be haunted, if anything residual haunting activity. The victims of the Mayan well sacrifice, Mayan arrow sacrifice and Mayan heart sacrifice most likely have left strong residual energy that negatively can be felt by tourists of this area.
After our investigation at Ek Balam, we headed for Cancun to prepare for our long trip home. This investigation was inconclusive, we did not find answers to the Mayan prophesy of 2012, but we do know that the past history of the Mayans haunt the land.
A couple more misfortunes befell us. Our flight delayed our arrival to Sacramento on October 31, 2008, Friday. This kept Shannon and I, from hosting the Ghost Girls Halloween Ball at the Haunted Sequoia Mansion. This had Shannon pretty stressed out and all I could do was be quiet, or I would probably also feel her rage. We did finally make it to the Sequoia Mansion late. Half of the people left, because we didnt show up on time, but the people that remained experienced great DJ music and dancing, dance contest, costume contest, tour of mansion, tour of cemetery and the finale was a séance. Some of the HPI paranormal investigators I recognized at this ball were: Chantal Apodaca, Melissa Billups, Tammy Straling, Michele Stump, Scott Young, Laura Miller, Christine B. of KFOK Georgetown. Note: I want to thank the mysterious woman that presented me with a beautiful HPI necklace at the Sequoia Mansion.
After this excursion I stayed at the haunted Cary House with Laura Miller, Tammy Straling & Chantal Apodaca. When we woke up in the morning, all of us briefly stopped by the haunted Diamond Springs Hotel. There are many haunted areas in this part of Placerville. If you are ever in the area, please check these places out, you wont be disappointed.
The other misfortune was simple. It was the loss of $11.00 worth of Everready AA batteries and the next misfortune is somewhat complex. For the small amount of 120 pesos, I enjoyed a tasty authentic Mexican dish at the Guacamole Grill at the Cancun Airport. Later on I paid in spades, as this tasty little lunch brandished me with the infamous Montezumas Revenge that lasted into Saturday. Nov, 1, my friend Gloria Ramos takes me to a post-Halloween house party in Elk Grove. I realized I was still sick as I started sampling the food. I left this party in a hurry and no one knew why I was leaving. Thanks a lot Guacamole Grill! Today is Sunday as I write this and I feel much, much better.
All in all, the Showtime adventure to Mexico was a thrill ride and I want to thank: Director: David Wechter; Camera: Dave Babb; Audio: Robb & Israel Gonzalez; Local Prod: Rene Blanco; Sen Prod: Aaron Yampolski; Producer: Patti Duce and Driver: Victor.
Until our next adventure!
