Molly Baumann Investigates Haunted Home in Grafton
This haunted house is a Victorian style house with three floors, and it used to be owned by the Webber family, and Mr. Webber was a brew master in Grafton. They had two kids, a son and a daughter. After the son went off to fight in WWII or WWI, (not sure which), he was killed in France while fighting. Six weeks later after his death, Mrs. Webber became depressed over her son's death, so she was depressed and drunk one night and somehow drowned in the cistern in their basement. It could have been a successful suicide attempt or an accident because she was drunk, and she could have passed out and fallen in the cistern, but either way, the story goes that one day Mr. Webber came home and found his wife floating in the cistern.
The owner of the house now, Trudy, says that when she bought the house from a broker, he included on the bill of the sale that the house came with an actual ghost. The ghost is said to be that of the son who died in the war, and people have seen him, including Trudy's dad, and she never told him about the ghost, and one day he came over to her and described what he saw as the top half of a young man, sometimes wearing a blue cape that soldiers wore in the war, or sometimes a flannel shirt. Trudy sometimes rents the upstairs rooms to people who need places to stay, and when people move in and out, the ghost usually doesn¢t like the change and becomes more active. Her tenants always come and ask her if she has a ghost, because they all have had odd experiences.
One man told her that at 2:30 in the morning, the ghost came and sat down on his bed because he could see the mattress go down as if someone just sat down on it. One lady complained of cold spots in different parts of her room, and asked Trudy if she could smudge it, the Native American way of getting rid of spirits or ghosts. Trudy said she didn¢t mind, so the lady went ahead and did it, and it worked, but the ghost moved to another room, so now a man is complaining about cold spots in his room now as well. That must mean that the ghost of the son is comfortable there, and doesn¢t want to leave. One girl kept asking Trudy if she had been in her room during the day and Trudy said she hadn¢t, and asked why, and the girl said when she got home, her stereo would be playing. And apparently this happened every day. Then the girl moved out, and the other stereo would start playing at 2:30n and wouldn't stop till four. Trudy said he may be somewhat of a techno freak. She also told me that there is this one door that leads to a heater that she closed one day, went somewhere else, and when she came back, it would be wide open. And she said to open it you had to grab the doorknob and turn it and kind of pull the door open because it was old and it stuck fast. When I was there, and she was talking to us about the house, I noticed that one of her electronic candles in the window that was set on a timer on the windowsill partially blocked by the refrigerator, and the curtains were covering it to, but I still saw it. Trudy said that it had never really happened anytime this year so she unplugged it and reset the timer, and it seemed to have stopped blinking, but I turned away for a second, and when I looked back, it was blinking again!!
Trudy said maybe he was trying to tell me something, and when we were in the basement, I thought I heard a mans voice add to our conversation but was said so fast and loud that I couldn¢t make out what the voice said. She also said that the ghost in the house is a nice ghost, but very cautious, which is good because some ghost stories I read were about ghosts that were everything but friendly. She also said she is willing to show anyone the history of her house, apparently, she loves doing it. that is all everyone really knows about the story behind the house and its ghost, but if I find out more I will let you know.
